With social distancing rues in place because of the coronavirus pandemic, Channel 7 will games from a remote bunker away from the grounds to obey the strict rules set in place.
The network’s managing director Lewis Martin said the station are ready to go whenever health experts and the AFL are given the all clear to resume play, with a mid-June return believed to be the target.
“The guys (callers) will be calling from a very hi-tech centre with multiple angles and statistics and with probably more facilities (than at the ground),” Martin told The Herald Sun.
“Obviously, we would always prefer to be there (at the ground), but in this environment, it is not meant to be.
“We don’t think the audience will notice too much of a difference.”
Martin said Channel 7 had learnt a lot from its experience calling games without crowds in round one and will be more ready than ever when the season resumes.
“We are looking at some different things to make the viewers feel a part of the broadcast and a part of the game,” he said.
“We are going to make sure we bring some flavour to it, without overdoing it.”
Crowd noise recordings may also be apart of the broadcast, but Martin said the station wouldn’t over-do it.
Bringing the fans closer to the action was also a point of discussion, with various options being discussed within the station to give fans an even greater experience while adhering to strict health protocols.
“There is no doubt that through adversity comes ingenuity and innovation,” he said. “Through this time we have been looking at certain things.”
“There will be innovations that we will discover only as a result of these challenging times which might one day become mainstays of the broadcast.”
