Yup forget about Rhyce Shaw, this could be his retirement year.

Sorry, but that defenders article is a bit rubbish. It doesn't talk about S Mitchell at all, who is arguably the first back to be picked. It says don't pick McVeigh because he is too expensive, but likes Bartel and Walker who are the same price. It still rates Heater, and thinks Rhyce Shaw is worth looking at - now I don't know much, but I know that Rhyce Shaw isn't worth looking at!!! (please correct me if I am wrong)

Well Rhysy-boy's wife may think he's worth looking at, but from a SC perspective, I can't see him making his way into my team of stunners...

On the issue of premo defenders generally, many seem to drop in price over the course of a year, but weighing up relative consistency on the one hand and picking up break-out players/regular playing rookies scoring 85+ can be a tough call. Can imagine 1 if not 2 of the top priced defenders make their way into most teams come round 1.

Continuing Philzsay's comments, to those smarter than me - should I ditch my 'pay no defender more than $500,000' rule??

(Note - I don't count S Mitchell in that group, he is a mid, not a defender...)
Surely Hanley at $516k is good value?? I've got A.Walker in there too at the moment, not so sure about that one. I prefer to ask myself where they'd be at season's end. If they look like a top 10 defender, a $500k ceiling is a bit silly.

If McVeigh is going to play more in def than the mids, I am more inclined not to pick him!!! The midfielders that are classed as backs are what we are trying to find here, so if he is going to spend more time in the back half than last year that is a big con.

But I have to disagree with the points made above, I feel McVeigh will be back spending more time in the mids this year, hence I have him in my starting team (for now)
"the midfielders that are classed as backs are what we are trying to find here" 'tis Mitchell.

There are always exceptions to the rule Drew - $500k seemed like a reasonable level from this year for a defender. Personally though, I have the following issues with the higher priced players:
- Bartel isn't getting any younger
- I have read that MM is reconsidering Walker's role
- There have been tonnes of changes at the Swans and they have rapidly developing mids, I am not sure McVeigh can hold that price

Mitchell I have picked, the other players closer to $500k all have their pros and cons. Of the defenders I used this year, only BJ held above $500k for the season and he is now classed as a pure mid. Some defenders were a lot cheaper by years end. I can only go off personal experience, and it is all in my opinion of course :)

Don't worry Broges, not having a go at you at all - unless you are the author of the article? :p

My concerns with the top 5 priced defenders.

McVeigh - 2013 was the first time he has averaged over 100. Possibly a tad overpriced at this stage.
Walker - 2013 was a huge leap from his previous seasons and again possibly a tad overpriced at this stage.
Bartel - 30yrs old. Great 2013 but i have doubts he can reproduce the magic again.
Mitchell - 31yrs old. Absolute gun of a player, slowly on the decline in terms of SC numbers, again maybe a tad overpriced.
Murphy - 31yrs old. Never been a major SC performer and doubtful he can reproduce his 99 average of 2013.

Am i right to have these concerns or should be be chucking one or two of these into my backline ASAP?

Yep Hanley is good value.
My concern is that Brisbane has a difficult draw start of season and equally difficult end of season.

I think out of the above Mitchell is worthwhile, I would hope he would average around 100. I've also pencilled in Enright and Adcock for a 90 something average.

Yeah Mitchell seems like a massive lock. Dont really see him in the backline too much either. I think he well get the 100 average although would love too see him kick the pill alot more this season

Wouldn't worry what the HS has to say about anything SC tbh. :)

I think the thing i liked most about Walker last year was his new found big top end, very handy for winning league matchups. That being said if Malthouse looks like handing a new role change i'd drop him like a hot potato.

Loving the 500k defender rule discussion going on. Too ****ed yo add anything of value at the moment but johno, mame and co have got me reconsidering Bartel, McVeigh, Walker (Mitchell is lock locked) for players with more upside like Birchall, McKenzie and Grimes (gulp).

Courtesans has me rethinking it lol. Current backline is:

Mitchell, Simpson, Birchall, Adcock, Suckling + rookies

The premos are all pretty consistent. I'll look to upgrade Suckling; best replacement I can afford for him is Scotland but he's too old.

There are some tempting cheaper players: McKenzie, Hurn, Grimes, Duffield, Swallow, Waters, Seedsman maybe. All have question marks though.

Mame, after last years fiasco, give me an Adcock, Enright any day of the week. I do admit I still bleed, so I am somewhat biased.:)

And then there's the old guys I want to write off but are just so consistent. Now I'm thinking about Enright.

A bit to be said for the shares that just give you the 1.5% every year. Call them, I reckon, your banker players.

Bartel, McVeigh, Walker not wroth the 500k. Mitchell would be as i see a 100ave from him. Hanley at 500k isnt for me, tag him one game and bang his under 450.
