I really like this team. How confident in Tom Phillips are you? While he is taking over a scully/smith sized hole, but those are two players who I've been impressed with SC wise.

It is a bit of a watch and act at the moment. Collingwood had a forced fire sale so I don't think it was like he was told you are not AFL standard and won't get a game so look for opportunities elsewhere. And Hawthorn are looking to bolster their midfield. He ave 90 in 2018 as a winger and on the Hawthorn FC website Phillips is quoted in different articles with the comments below.

"I'm really excited to getting back into hunting the footy on the wing and really announce myself there."

"I think my strengths have always been on the outside, running and linking up, connecting the backs and forwards whilst playing on the wing. I think there's an opportunity, being on the wing or giving a chop-out inside, to help the team with my versatility. So I want to continue to be able to play inside the contest, so I just want to be able get a good balance in my game this year."

first draft

thoughts, pre avergae team, no real surprises sier and hately

Everything is good except the mids. I think you are a bit light on. If you are going to spec with mid pricers the mids is least preferred place to do it IMO. Maybe one is okay but you have three (Rowell, Sier and Hately). I think you need one more premo lock mid.

Updated team:

Kitty: $2,200

B: Lloyd, McDonald, Houli, Z.Williams, R.Thompson, Wehr (Highmore, A.Fyfe)

M: Neale, J.Macrae, T.Mitchell, Cripps, Heppell, Powell, F.Macrae, Valente (Mead, Downie, A.Davies)

R: Grundy, Goldstein (Treacy)

F: Dangerfield, Marshall, Zorko, Caldwell, Cockatoo, Laurie (Rowe, Durdin)

Main ones I am still debating:

- Doherty is temping - 19th more expensive defender and was number 1 and dominant a few seasons ago
- Not sold on Heppell but gee he is cheap. Still in a moon boot apparently
- Danger interrupted pre season so will watch with interest
- Assuming Caldwell will play enough midfield minutes
- Not starting Gawn is hard ....
- Rookie - TBD (prob didn’t spend enough but will see after pre season the locks)
- Need to see Houli fit and firing in pre season but a bit of a POD only in 2% of teams

Like others stuffing around with different structures, here's a side that i don't think I actually have the guts to run with, but what piques my interest with this is that there are 14 blokes in there who are likely keepers. Clearly very risky and the ruck combo could go VERY pear shaped. Captain options also a problem. rookies are random place holders. MacRae/ bont can easily be any 2 other high priced mids.

Think i just talked myself out of it...

R: Pruess, Martin (Treacy)
F: Marshall, Walters, Heeney, Cameron, Campbell, Perkins (Cockatoo, Rowe)

Star midfielder/forward Michael Walters was unable to run for a large period of the off-season after suffering ligament damage to his right foot. He has spent time training away from the main group as he builds fitness.

Yeah I think for 14 keepers something between where you arrived and @OnTopBar above would be more comfortable.

Although I'll take my hat off to anyone who starts Draper + Preuss which I think I like more than the Hickey pick.

I like this iteration, 14 keepers + the Big4, bit light on rookie $ but there is a contingency plan. Probably wont change it much from here on.........yeah, right, who am I kidding. View attachment 25595
I think the rookie selection will force you to change. it is normal this time of the year to say they are placeholders, however, it is speculative to think there is so many cheap ones, which then forces us into change as season start and we end up with cheap premium or mid pricers we hadn't spent much time thinking about, hence why there were not in our team. Better to balance now. Maybe get in a few more expensive players coming back from injury.

I do like your premium picks. My only adjustment if wanting funds will be to make a choice of downgrading a Shai Bolton/Taranto or downgrade Llloyd to a defender who will likely be top 6-8 (think 3-8 will all be pretty similar), giving you a spare $120k or so say to spend elsewhere. Will be interesting to see Phillips is worth the investment for 198k (you don't have), recent years has shown this is worth paying for.

My team

D: Laird, Stewart, Williams, Jones, Bianco, Highmore (Gould, Wehr)
M: Neale, Olivier, Gaff, Walsh, Cripps, Rowell, Phillips, Powell (Macrae, Valente, Cook)
R: Grundy, Gawn (Treacy)
F: Marshall, Rozee, Ziebell, Daniher, Impey, Rowe (Cockatoo, Ford)
Bold denotes fairly fixed in the side.
Cash $87k

Options
Cerra has been in and out of mid side for Cripps/Rowell.
6th midfielder has changed between mid price or cheap premium mid/breakout to be a defender or forward (Whitfield/Dusty).

Cripps and Rowell vs Cerra and Dusty or Whitfield
Rozee to Ben Brown = Rowell or Cripps and Williams to go to Macrae and Whitfield

Hello

Here is my latest iteration of my team.

I must point out that I had not really considered McInerney as R2 (thanks to Manikato).

Overall it is a typical GnR, with high end rookies in the midfield and an 'El Cheapo' forwards.

I have included the 'Human Meatball', as I think he is good value and his ceiling is quite high, at worse he is a stepping stone to a Oliver type.
It would be appreciated for any critique.

Thanks GFR, appreciate your input. My plan is to drop Bolton and move Dusty forward if those more expensive rookies do show themselves. I don't like any of Ziebell, Brown, Daniher or Impey right now. It's been mentioned that both Phillips and Powell are a bit raw and we might not see them debut for a while. I'm not keen on young KPF's either so JUH, Thilthorpe and McDonald wont be starting, Hollands is injured, DGB might get a run, I think one of Perkins, Cox or Reid is injured. Not many of the top ten are screaming 'pick me', but I'll be playing the BE game so if they're showing then they'll be in.

The defence does look a little weak considering the amount of rookies on the field.
