We see so many people lament what the game has become (including a number on this forum) mainly due to the congestion and the reduce scoring. We then criticise the AFL for attempting to do something about it. I don’t know if it will work or not however on face value it should help the free flow of the game and is worth a try.

In any event why should a player on the mark have the right to move sideways and diminish the advantage the marking player has earned anyway. I suspect the original rule was that they had to “stand” because the mark is a spot not a line.
The answer is simple:
  1. Pay holding the man
  2. Pay incorrect disposal
That will breakup any congestion!

I am somewhat surprised with the number of comments that indicate a lot of people don't understand the impact this rule would have. Eagles coach Adam, Simpson called this a major change not like some of the ones that "tinker" around the edges. In SC scoring terms it potentially has an impact on key leading forwards and running backs that could increase their metres gained considerably (J Short anyone?). The Western Bulldogs were the top team for playing on last season however that stat was from a news article and I have never been able to find stats anywhere for teams that play on or players for that matter. I did ask in one of the threads a while back but no one replied.
Playing on from kick ins?

Playing on from kick ins?
I was more interested in around the ground stats. The comment re the Bulldogs made no mention if it did or did not include kickins. But I have seen stats for kick ins before. Given the Bulldogs were the top dog in that respect I assumed (dangerous) that a stat must have existed.

Totally this. IMO much of the congestion is because the umps have been directed not to pay a kick. It is no prior opportunity etc. If you have the ball and are tackled you must dispose of it correctly by hand or foot. It makes the umps job so much easier. No "interpretation". And no one stands around in a circle 5m from the man when a free kick is awarded. They all clear out because the ball is most likely going to get kicked at least 20 or 30m from where it currently is and they need to man up.

On this @Herbie66

If they then decide to play on (by moving sideways off the mark) why shouldn't the defender be able to move as well to counter it , as they are now disadvantaged by the kicker choosing to play on.

Hocking from the AFL said last year (paraphrasing here) he was looking forward to seeing more goals kicked because the kicker could play on without being impeded by the man on the mark.

not having much luck trying to locate, been checking Champion Data, and Fantasy Freako, do you recall roughly when or who the article was written by?

The Adam Simpson comments and the Bulldogs comment about them being the team that plays on the most were both in an article in the West Australian some time in the past week or two. Given it was written by a journo I would think Champion Data probably would have that stat somewhere and that is where the info came from. But like I said I have never seen any stats on any public forum for playing on.

Thanks for trying though.

The West Australian has a paywall too.

My initial thought was that no player would attempt to identify the mark. They would retreat 4 or 5 steps back from where they think the mark is and be free to do what they like. It will be interesting to see if they allow that kind of tactic. This might cut down on the player running past for the handball. I suspect the umps are going to be asked to identify where the mark is a lot more now so players can ensure they are not standing on it.
I think this is right. The protected zone (for players from both teams) around the player (if there is one) on the mark is 5 metres. Defensive players will sag back outside this zone and the player taking the kick will effectively be able to kick from the point of the mark rather than having to back peddle to take the kick. Obviously once he crosses that point then it's play on. Will definitely make for faster ball movement.

As people have said, this advantages the kicker considerably. Which makes me think (as people have also said) that coaches will either elect to just defend closer to the goal rather than "team defence" the whole ground, or play tight 1 on 1 to not give away cheap marks (because marks are suddenly worth so much more).

Given the second is so hard, I think we'll see a lot more of the first: concede the kick off half back/midfield but defend the 50m arc with all you've got. Great .

Given the kick in rules seemed to give us an abundance of defenders averaging 100 or more, will this new rule just inflate them even more?

Take a mark and you get a no-pressure long kick: ++SC points thank you very much

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2021/02/22/lloyds-february-flyers-primed-for-big-2021-seasons/
Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has listed the players who he thinks are primed for big 2021 seasons.

Speaking on Sportsday on Monday night, Lloyd named his ‘February Flyers' - players who have caught the eye during the pre-season.

Aaron Naughton (Western Bulldogs)

“I was at a function and a Western Bulldogs player was there, I won’t say who he was," Lloyd said.

“He said Aaron Naughton in training has been unstoppable. I think he could be an outstanding centre-half back but forward is where they need him.

“They said that in one of the games he played … in three quarters of footy had 24 disposals, 14 marks and kicked five goals - and he took a mark that they believe would have been Mark of the Year.

“It’s exciting.”

Harry McKay and Zac Fisher (Carlton)

“Another key forward who kicked five goals for Carlton last week was Harry McKay.

“They cry out for a small forward at Carlton and I’m told that Zac Fisher has been told, ‘you’re a small forward, that’s where you’re going to play’ and he has had a wonderful pre-season.

“I don’t know what that means for Eddie Betts, but Zac Fisher, at the feet, has been looking dangerous and as a lively forward as they’ve had in a long, long time.”

Nick Larkey, Jaidyn Stephenson and Bailey Scott (North Melbourne)

“Nick Larkey is going really well, his combination with (Cam) Zurhaar is exciting people and Jaidyn Stephenson, they are extremely happy with him through the midfield.

“And look out for a wingman, Bailey Scott. Into his third season, they’re really happy with what he’s doing.

Jack Sinclair (St Kilda)

“He’s fitter than he’s ever been before, he’s getting higher up the field, can run back, and is kicking goals.

"He’s become sort of an extra mid-forward with the way he’s going.”

Nik Cox (Essendon)

“Pencil him in to play on a wing this year - Round 1 - and then develop into a key position player.

“He’s the one of the three (first-round picks) that the Bombers expect to play nice and early.”

Noah Anderson, Ben Ainsworth and Will Brodie (Gold Coast)

“It’s (Noah) Anderson, no surprise there.

“(Ben) Ainsworth is flying and Will Brodie, they say, has finally turned the corner, and is ready to play and play from the start.

“They reckon there’s been a real change in him.”

One attacking strategy could be to keep chipping the ball around 60-70m from goal and just wait for a defender to be unlucky (or stupid) and get pinged for the 50m leading to an easy shot at goal...

Not sure why we need to bring in a new set of rules every season. The game is so poorly officiated as it is. Paying HTB/Incorrect disposal would be a good start. And stop players holding up the opposition after a mark or free kick. The amount of time they get to sit on a bloke or give the ball back is ridiculous. Just let’s players flood back into space. And waiting for ruckmen to get to a stoppage, I bet they just waffle over as slowly as they can to get more time for players to set up.

I think they were going to be trialling a rule in the VFL this year where they have to have 3 players in each 50m arc? I think that could work in well with the new rule in opening things up a bit - at least you will only have 24 or 30 players swarm around the ball at any time, rather than 36...

Still not a fan of other rules that are unchanged where it is up to umpire interpretation, but hopefully scoring increases with this change, it will take few weeks to settle in before we know. I assume there will be articles early saying it's a great success due to higher scores before clubs figure out how to manipulate the rules a bit and it ends up being similar scoring to usual within a month or two.
