AFL’s new concussion rules could be challenged by Collingwood in Round 9 after two players have been excluded from the concussion, even though they have passed the concussion test.
Magpie coach Nathan Buckley revealed after the match that both Jordan Roughead and Nathan Murphy passed the test despite withdrawing from the club’s Medico victory in North Melbourne on Saturday. ..
Under league rules, this pair will not be available for a clash with Sydney next weekend. However, Pai may evaluate whether AFL’s Chief Medical Officer is granted an exemption.
“Both boys out of the game actually passed the concussion test,” Buckley said at a post-game press conference.
“Before I entered, I was just chatting with Wrighty (Graham Wright). What does that mean if they pass the concussion test? We collect that information throughout the week.”
When asked how Murphy was crushed because of a concussion, Buckley said:
“That’s what I’m trying to find. Mostly it comes down to our documentation, the vision is contained in it.
“I understand the decision at the moment. He needs to make a decision based on all the evidence available. There is only one test and I don’t know what that means in the future.
“If I said it, I would be talking outside of school.”
Four-time Premiership player Jordan Lewis was confused about how the decision was made, but believed that club doctors would have considered not only a pure concussion test, but other factors as well. ..
Murphy missed a week of action earlier this season with a VFL head knock.
“From what I read, I think the doctor thought it was his decision to take him off because of a concussion,” Lewis said.

“I appreciated all the evidence he saw, the clashes, and perhaps Murphy’s player. He made the decision, thought he had a concussion, and took him away.”
“They have time to make a decision. That’s one thing you decide to take him away, but he passes the concussion test. Even Nathan Buckley was confused.”
