Only 2 things initially spring to mind in this scenario:

1. You may lose an important league match if your volatile player goes low on a particular week. If you have too many of these guys you may not generate enough wins during the season if you get unlucky. Conversely, you could smash teams as well and end up first with high percentage if you play the right teams on the right week!

2. Cash loss/generation. If your volatile player plays REALLY well for weeks in a row (like Cloke for the Dimmawits), then you have earnt yourself some handy cash and can bring in another player who'll average the same as Cloke for the season or better, making some important $$$. If your volatile player plays poorly for weeks in a row, you'd have to ride the wave to save yourself burning trades and wait for him to even out.

I think in a risk/reward sense there is a case for having some of these volatile players. For your sanity though I wouldn't run with too many of these types! If they play 22 games at the same average as Mr. Consistent then you certainly haven't lost out.
Thanks Kakarot. That's exactly my thinking as well - while league matches are fun to monitor and it is always nice to get a win, my ultimate goal is the overall prize (at this point of the season) and I don't think it really maters whether or not my player is consistent or not provided they score a 100 point average.

If anyone else does see a disadvantage or advantage other than the fact these type of players may be more of a POD then that would be appreciated!!!!

These are the new rules but doesn't look it says how long they go for lol

NAB Challenge to trial new substitute rules

Clubs will be allowed to reset their substitute players at half time during the pre-season competition as a possible precursor to a change in the way the substitute system operates in the season proper.

During the pre-season competition clubs will be entitled to six players on the bench with two substitutes, and a total interchange cap of 130, not including further changes that may be made in the breaks between quarters.

Under the pre-season trial, clubs will also be able to use two substitutes in the first half of games then begin the second half of the match with either two new substitutes or have the same two players re-don the green vests.

In the home and away season, there will be an interchange cap of 120 (also not including changes made at quarter breaks) for the bench of three players and one substitute.

AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said the trial of re-setting the substitute came as a result of a push by coaches.

''In effect the coach will be able to use two subs in the first half then choose another two substitutes, or the same two substitutes, in the second half. We would really like to see how that goes,'' he said at the launch of the new pre-season competition format of a carnival of football with 18 games in 18 days.

The format ''was one of the suggestions that came from the clubs consultations with us last year - this idea of having the ability to re-set the sub after half-time, so we were quite keen to have a look at that.

''Nine points will again be awarded for goals kicked from outside the 50 metre arc but other rules trialed in previous years do not apply this year."
Evans said the priority was on bedding down the mechanism for implementing the cap on interchange. He said the carnival idea of a game a day for 18 days hoped to borrow from some of the recent success of cricket’s Big Bash league. ''It feels like we have been waiting a long time for footy to return, cricket has warmed the seat for us, but thankfully footy is finally back.

''You see the way the Big Bash is rolled out and sometimes you just turn the television on and it is just there in front of you and you get engaged with it so to have a game a day for 18 days will be fantastic for people tuning in to the broadcast.''

Other new rules will be seen in the pre-season competition, which begins on Wednesday, that will also apply in the premiership season. The more significant changes relate to players who lead with the head to try to draw a free kick for high contact. Players who are bent over and drive into a stationary, or near stationary, player will be considered to have had prior opportunity and his action tantamount to ducking the head.

Similarly, play on will be called if a player is considered to have ducked into a tackle. This rule, seeking to stop players dropping at the knees, would appear more difficult to police. ''Where a player deliberately ducks into a tackle the call will be play on. The onus is still on the person tackling to make sure they are indiscriminate but we are trying to discourage players from risking injury to themselves,'' Evans said.

There will be more leeway for a show of strength in a marking contest for players who work an opponent out of the contest with strength or use their body to hold a player out to protect an area. The rule on hands in the back still remains.

''There has been a misunderstanding on that. The change is bringing the wording of the law into line with how we think it is best umpired at present, so we have added in there that there can be some form of push or bump as part of that contact but it must be secondary to the contest. The only real clarification is where you see a key forward and a key back side-by-side and it really is a show of strength,'' he said.

There will also be more discretion for the umpire in adjudicating on a player being within the protected area. If the player is thought to have attempted to delay or ''impacted'' the player in possession of the ball, he will be penalised. ''Players must remain passive if caught within the protected area and exit the area immediately,'' the rule says.
Clubs will now only have one runner and trainers, wearing pink vests, will only be allowed on the field at appropriate breaks in play.

For those who don't have Supercoach Gold here is some sneaky info

Breakout candidates they believe in 2014

Mitch Wallis (Bulldogs – MID)
2013 = 72 average
Prediction = 95 average in 2014

Currently in the shadow of team mate and fellow draftee Tom Liberatore who jumped his average up 24pts last year. He was given quite a few defensive responsibilities in 2013 and if he’s relieved of those duties his average will rocket. Wallis was a ball magnet as a kid and it’s now his turn in 2014.

Brandon Ellis (Richmond – MID)
2013 = 82 average
Prediction = 102 average in 2014

Ellis averaged 100 in his last 7 games for the year and had huge scores of 155, 143 and 128. He enters his third season and has the potential to be a premium of the SuperCoach world. With more midfield time, he’ll only be better.

Josh Caddy (Geelong – FWD/MID)
2013 = 60 average
Prediction = 86 average in 2014

Caddy has been one of the best runners so far over the Geelong pre-season and is listed as a FWD/MID in 2014 for the first time ever. The former #7 draftee is ready to really step it up this year and I’m tipping him to go BANG!

Steven Coniglio (Greater Western Sydney – MID)
2013 = 74 average
Prediction = 91 average in 2014

Coniglio enters his 3rd season in the AFL and could become a premium player of the future. Over his first two years he averaged 76 and 74. He was selected at No. 2 in the 2011 draft for a reason. Watch-out.

David Swallow (Gold Coast – DEF)
2013 = 80 average
Prediction = 93 average in 2014

For the first time, David Swallow can be selected as a defender. From his debut season, the 2010 No. 1 draftee has averaged 79, 79 and 80 but has never stepped it up to the level he is capable of. This will be his year! All kids take time to develop and with more midfield time he will certainly push his average over the 90+ mark for the first time.
Matthew Lobbe (Port Adelaide – RUCK)
2013 = 86 average
Prediction = 105 average in 2014

Although he’s priced at his average of 86, Lobbe can still go BANG in 2014. He is a jet and came home like a steam train last year and averaged 105 in his last seven games of the year. Lobbe is now cemented as Port’s number 1 ruck option. Ruckman take time to develop and Lobbe is up and going now.

Shane Savage (St Kilda – MID)
2013 = 63 average
Prediction = 92 average in 2014

The former Hawk arrives at St Kilda after a disappointing 2013. But, it’s always hard when you’re wearing a vest. He averaged 87.5 when he didn’t wear a vest making him a huge contender to ‘break-out’ this year if he’s given the chance. Could be one of the biggest improvers of 2014!

Paul Seedsman (Collingwood – DEF)
2013 = 79 average
Prediction = 91 average in 2014

Paul Seedsman is a newly listed defender in 2014 and would be a great unique selection in your SuperCoach team. He average 92 in the last 9 games of the year after securing himself in Collingwood’s best 22. Seedsman had monster scores to of 145 points and 126 points during that period and would be a sure thing to improve on his average of 79 this year.

Dylan Shiel (Greater Western Sydney – MID)
2013 = 76 average
Prediction = 94 average in 2014

Shiel enters his third season this year and that alone places him as a ‘break-out’ contender. He has averaged 75 and 76 over the last 2 years and should be pushing the 90+ average mark this year.

Dom Tyson (Melbourne – MID)
2013 = 45 average
Prediction = 81 average in 2014

HOTTEST TIP – The former #3 draft pick a ball magnet. He averaged 25d in the NEAFL when coming back from a knee injury and now finds himself at the Demons. He is another player entering his third season and is my hottest tip from this list. Tyson has only played 13 games at the AFL level but with more opportunities this year under Paul Roos, he’s set to explode!

I don't know if it has been mentioned, I just read that Fyfe is delaying contract talks.
Anyone else thinking Cloke 2012, Buddy 2013.
Delayed contract talks can be a SuperCoach killer!

Lol!

We don't do presents either but I'll be taking the wife out for dinner tonight. She got a Valentine's Day cupcake yesterday from a bakery I found near work. She must've been tuned into me coz I got a similar one in return.

Rockpool is great. Went there last year (not for V-Day) and was impressed with the food.
