NAB Challenge to trial new substitute rules
Clubs will be allowed to reset their substitute players at half time during the pre-season competition as a possible precursor to a change in the way the substitute system operates in the season proper.
During the pre-season competition clubs will be entitled to six players on the bench with two substitutes, and a total interchange cap of 130, not including further changes that may be made in the breaks between quarters.
Under the pre-season trial, clubs will also be able to use two substitutes in the first half of games then begin the second half of the match with either two new substitutes or have the same two players re-don the green vests.
In the home and away season, there will be an interchange cap of 120 (also not including changes made at quarter breaks) for the bench of three players and one substitute.

AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said the trial of re-setting the substitute came as a result of a push by coaches.
''In effect the coach will be able to use two subs in the first half then choose another two substitutes, or the same two substitutes, in the second half. We would really like to see how that goes,'' he said at the launch of the new pre-season competition format of a carnival of football with 18 games in 18 days.
The format ''was one of the suggestions that came from the clubs consultations with us last year - this idea of having the ability to re-set the sub after half-time, so we were quite keen to have a look at that.
''Nine points will again be awarded for goals kicked from outside the 50 metre arc but other rules trialed in previous years do not apply this year."
Evans said the priority was on bedding down the mechanism for implementing the cap on interchange. He said the carnival idea of a game a day for 18 days hoped to borrow from some of the recent success of cricket’s Big Bash league. ''It feels like we have been waiting a long time for footy to return, cricket has warmed the seat for us, but thankfully footy is finally back.
''You see the way the Big Bash is rolled out and sometimes you just turn the television on and it is just there in front of you and you get engaged with it so to have a game a day for 18 days will be fantastic for people tuning in to the broadcast.''
Other new rules will be seen in the pre-season competition, which begins on Wednesday, that will also apply in the premiership season. The more significant changes relate to players who lead with the head to try to draw a free kick for high contact. Players who are bent over and drive into a stationary, or near stationary, player will be considered to have had prior opportunity and his action tantamount to ducking the head.
Similarly, play on will be called if a player is considered to have ducked into a tackle. This rule, seeking to stop players dropping at the knees, would appear more difficult to police. ''Where a player deliberately ducks into a tackle the call will be play on. The onus is still on the person tackling to make sure they are indiscriminate but we are trying to discourage players from risking injury to themselves,'' Evans said.
There will be more leeway for a show of strength in a marking contest for players who work an opponent out of the contest with strength or use their body to hold a player out to protect an area. The rule on hands in the back still remains.
''There has been a misunderstanding on that. The change is bringing the wording of the law into line with how we think it is best umpired at present, so we have added in there that there can be some form of push or bump as part of that contact but it must be secondary to the contest. The only real clarification is where you see a key forward and a key back side-by-side and it really is a show of strength,'' he said.
There will also be more discretion for the umpire in adjudicating on a player being within the protected area. If the player is thought to have attempted to delay or ''impacted'' the player in possession of the ball, he will be penalised. ''Players must remain passive if caught within the protected area and exit the area immediately,'' the rule says.
Clubs will now only have one runner and trainers, wearing pink vests, will only be allowed on the field at appropriate breaks in play.
