Big Footy - The_Axeman

Intraclub game

It was a stinker of a day heat wise. I very quickly moved to the shade provided by the great John Jennedy Snr to watch the game with houdinihuddo & SYL. Ordovician joined us in the 2nd Qtr.

Here are my thoughts (sorry If I am repeating what others have already said or contradicting what others have said. Actually, on second thoughts, I'm not sorry):

Gold

Gunners
T Philips
Big Boy
Parsons
Lynch
Jekka
Shiels
Rule
Worpel
Ward
Morris
Lewis
Porter
Aducci
Hardwick
Newcomb
Green
Moore

Brown

Finn
Jaeger
Macdonald
Bramble
Seamus
DGB
Seeing
Kosi
Callow
Howe
Hartigan
Sicily
T Mitchell
Reeves
Ed Philips
Frosty
Scrimshaw
Wynd
Morrison

Best on (in my opinion):

Newcombe
Howe
Moore
Lewis

Newcombe
dominated in the midfield and went forward and had an impact. Kicked at least a couple. He is a beast. Remember, this is his first AFL preseason. Lock for round 1.

Lewis spent a lot of time playing on shorter opponents, nonetheless he was outstanding today. Great marking and a bag of goals. Don't know how many he kicked, 5 maybe plus a few behinds. He also got up the ground and took marks. Huge game from him.

Moore was brilliant. His overhead marking was a strength and he basically just caused havoc in the forward half offensively and defensively. Kicked a ripper goal . Sublime game from Dylan

Howe was excellent from the first bounce to the last. Spent time at half back and on the wing and was effective everywhere he went. I have him playing round 1.

Callow had a great day. He dominated early, dropped off a little bit but was consistently good. He got up the ground and took marks, delivered nicely to the forwards. I think he got a goal or two and did some rucking at one point.. Promising signs.

Ward & Macdonald were both excellent. I would actually give Macdonald the edge over Ward today. He combined well with Jaegar & Tom. Jaegar had a slow start but came alive in qtr 2 and dominated for a while and was very good from then onwards. Mitchell was also good.

Worpel was probably the next best mid after Newcombe.

Morrison was excellent. The epitome of composure and like Howe, just effective with everything he did, including some sublime runs down the middle. Round 1 liley, but who misses out?

Surprise of the day was Ned Long. He was really good all day. His kicking is outstanding.

Reeves had the better of Lynch in the ruck. He worked well with Tom & Jaegar. and took a fantastic mark in the back 50. Lynch got better later in the game thanks to his endurance. I also like the way that Lynch gets involved around the ground. Seems to be a reliable user of the ball. I think they will be a good combo in the coming years.

Defender wise, Sicily was outstanding just doing what he always does. Denver was unhinged in all the right ways. Hartigan had a bit of a downer but has been very good every other session I've seen.

Scrimshaw was classy as you would expect and Hardwick just did what he always does.

Seamus Mitchell had a 5 minute patch at the end of the the first qtr where he was up and about and probably had two or three goal assists.

Tom Philips was rarely sighted. Same for Jeka.

Did not play:
Wingard
Impey
CJ
Day
Nash
O'Hara
Brockman

(Would post the detailed write up from Kambo on BF that I mentioned previously but I am having a lot of issues with copy/pasting not working well tonight, it's over about 10 posts. Even this single post above has taken about 5 mins to copy/paste properly...).

@Ironhawk - what you be your best 22 for round 1 at this stage?

Ward & MacDonald looking very good for round 1 reading these reports, is Finn Maginness a realistic chance also?
Team selection will be very tough decision. Both Ward and MacDonald have been in good form and have done pretty much all they can for a spot in R1. I'd be picking both if it was up to me. There will be players who will be stiff to miss out though, especially in the mid field.

Finn is borderline for me, I think he could still play, but will probably need to have a good few practice matches over the next few weeks. I had picked him in my team originally but will probably look elsewhere.

Quick potential rd 1 team for me, and I'm likely forgetting a couple of names here:

Def: Frost, Hartigan, Hardwick, Impey, Scrimshaw, Sicily
Mid/ruck: Mitchell, Newcombe, O'Meara, Reeves, Ward, Worpel
Fwd: Breust, Gunston, Lewis, McEvoy, Moore, Wingard
Int/sub: Bramble, DGB, MacDonald, Morrison, Shiels

In team if fit: Day, Jiath. Not sure who drops out for them.

Unlucky to miss that team above include Brockman, Howe, Koschitzke, Lynch, Maginness, Nash, Phillips. There's almost surely a few in this list here who will make it in to the team instead of those I selected, but it's not easy to pick at this stage!

Newcombe name keeps popping up. Don’t know much about him is he worth a look?

He seems to be a favourite of Sam, his SC was a bit up and down in his 6 games last year, with a couple of good scores. Probably a bit risky for me with a lot of alternatives.
If he was a forward with the right role I'd be all over him, mid only would mean a lot of the cheaper guys or more proven similarly priced guys would need to fail.

He basically scored excellently when playing midfield and awfully when playing anywhere else last year. His tackling his skill that is already elite level. Will be an interesting balance for that midfield as they've basically got all inside guys right now so genuinely intrigued to see how they get some outside balance into it or if they just try and go all out grunts at the coalface and smash teams physically.

Just one more post on this, a club report on the Hawks intraclub on Tuesday. It was posted yesterday, but I was a bit busy and only just caught up.

I think Jack Dyer was quoted "If you are first to the ball, you don't have to tackle'
He also played in a very different era! Probably had slightly better ruck service than the Hawks mids are likely to get also!

Tackling is a great way to have a very strong base in SC, if you stick 5+ a game you're on a really good path to good scores.

Plus, after the first time you annihilate someone with a tackle (not that AFL players are allowed to tackle hard anymore) it becomes a lot easier to be first to the ball because those footsteps get awfully loud ;)

Over on BF, it's been mentioned numerous times that JHF absolutely dominated in the intraclub for North today playing as mid and half-fwd. Just lock him in to your sides.

Others to impress were Powell, Thomas, Zurhaar, Larkey, CCJ and Phillips.
Yeah, if he was playing for Melb, Dogs, Lions then maybe there would be an issue with him getting a game but at the Roos...not as if they don't need to improve!

Polec at $246,900 would have been an interesting selection, there is value as he hasn't gone below 81 in the previous four seasons prior to 2021 but with the amount of mid rookies that it looks like we'll be getting, probably not.
Fringe best 22 too. Think he’ll play VFL more often than not this season.
