One club’s trash … ?
With the dust settling on an active AFL trade period, a number of Darkness players have been squeezed out, and find themselves without an AFL club to call home for 2023.
Chances are that some have played their last AFL game, but there’s speculation that most could be given another opportunity - either at a new club, or a chance at redemption at their existing club (see links below).
Players can still be added to AFL lists via the delisted free agent window, supplemental selection period, or rookie draft.
The list below includes some players on nice UL contracts, and we’ve seen what can happen when a player gets an opportunity at a new club - with players like Will Brodie and Patrick Lipinski going to a new level after changing clubs this year.
If you have any interest in taking a punt on one of these names, let me know:
Sydney Stack
- Came 3rd in the 2019 rising star, ahead of Bailey Smith and Nick Blakey, and averaged 80 in his first season.
- 2 years @ 480k average, plus matching rights.
Riley Collier-Dawkins
- First round from 2018, squeezed out with Hopper and Taranto going to Richmond.
- 3 years @ 200k, plus matching rights.
Quinton Narkle
- Less than 50 games to his name, but has shown a very nice ceiling, with scores of 134, 124, 115, 111 and 104.
- 3 years @ 400k.
Oleg Markov
- Can score well as a half back with blistering pace, averaged c. 80 last year ex an injury game.
- 2 years @ 320k.
Connor Blakely
- Averaged 25 touches in the WAFL, but couldn’t get a game behind Brayshaw, Serong, Brodie, Mundy and Fyfe.
- 1 year @ 420k.
Tyler Brown
- Hasn’t shown a lot at AFL level, but got 36% CBAs last year and is only 22.
- 2 years @ 200k.
Caleb Poulter
- 193cm mid who averaged 64 in 10 full games in his first season.
- Just finishing his first contract, so you could choose the length of his second contract with more info if he gets picked up. Average salary will be <300k even for a 5 year deal.
To be clear, as things stand, none of these guys will be on a list next year, so it would be taking a punt that they get picked up and perform in a new environment/perhaps a new role.
Pricing would, of course, reflect that fact, so a pick upgrade would suffice. The freed-up list spots are a bit of a surprise in most cases, but handy for me, so I’m happy if someone else wants to take a cheap punt on a good young prospect/nice UL contract getting a second chance.
