Position 2023: Midfield Discussion

100% my preference. Mostly because I have no feel on the defenders right now so I'd rather pay for information there.
If the rookies look roughly even with other positions then I'll be stacking hard.
Doesn't hurt that you've got Whitfield, Crisp and Short all currently in the mids that could definitely get DEF status and also definitely could be top 5 if they do which is just another reason to not be loaded up down back.
I do hope that there's enough rookies spread across to actually allow some different structures this year, last few years where we've basically been forced into the same structures have been kind of bland. Lot more fun when you've got people going heavy defender rookies or heavy mid rookies and the like.

That's it Shaun and I was only being tongue in cheek with Pete, but yeah it can feel like a massive mistake going very light on a line and then they all proceed to drastically under-perform to what you expected, I feel like I've gone reasonably deep in the mids with Green at M5 and Ashcroft, Mackenzie and Phillips M6 to M8 (no Hopper). I am fairly light down back with Stewart, Daicos Yeo. Coffield and 2 rookies. Thinking of going Fyfe and Ziebell fwd too.
It feels a bit easier this year for some reason. Probably the cheap backs which could quickly fall away but definitely feels nice. Midfielders also generally pretty easy to get good value on as well, either the types who fade under tags copping a couple (Merrett springs to mind) or guys who just end up forward for a few weeks and drop off 20% (Bont or Petracca prime examples).
That said, feels like given there wont be any DPP changes that effect the mids it's a lot easier to pick the top guys, if you've got a Bont type and he gets forward status then you just swing and pick the next cab off the rank. Basically the starting mids are the safest because no one is coming and replacing them or changing the dynamics of the position.
I'd honestly like to get 6 as I've got plenty of room for Neale, Petracca and Macrae that aren't currently in my side and could also definitely see my self picking a Tom Greene type also. Steele is the one I've got right now with the most questions about him.
PS. It's also odd this year that so far the mid rookies definitely aren't screaming out, it will probably change but normally there'd be 4 or 5 names being thrown around by now.

True - latest I heard on Sinn is he is only just back in training now so I doubt he will be playing round 1, more likely to start in the SANFL I think. King I have no real interest in tbh.
What I am seriously contemplating if Mackenzie impresses in the practice games & looks start worthy (even after the scars of Ward last year 😜) is going 4 fwd premium deep in the fwds/ then Fyfe & McLean at F5/F6.
Those with King/van Rooyen/ Fergus Greene/Combden on the field at F6 are taking a real risk with potential low scores.
The only other cheap fwd I am looking at currently for the F6 spot is Luke Pedlar (173K) who is having a great preseason, looks set for half fwd role - very keen to see him in action in the preseason games.

I need to see a fair bit to pick him personally, there was games last year where the role was fine and he still struggled to get near the footy, obviously natural progression is expected but I'm struggling to see the consistency over 4 quarters being there to the level that we get a 110+ mid here.
I just question if the tank is there when a guys consistently getting their time on ground and centre bounce attendances capped.
