Isaac Heeney is set for a change in role next season, he will spend more time playing a midfield role in 2022 according to Sydney senior coach John Longmire.

With the Swans losing both George Hewett & Jordan Dawson in the off-season there are opportunities in the midfield available, Longmire outlined his plan for Heeney in an interview on Sportsday earlier this week.

When Longmire was specifically asked if Heeney could see a 50/50, 60/40 or a 70/30 midfield/forward split in 2022 he replied:

“I think that he’s probably getting up towards that.. a bit more in the midfield now.””

“He got through this season quite well,”

“At the back end of the year he was training really well & able to play games out really well.”

“He naturally keeps himself in fantastic shape, so we’ll be playing him a bit more in the midfield this year.”

“We think he can still play in the midfield & push forward, probably be about 70/30 type split.” Longmire said.

The Swans recently began their pre-season campaign, Longmire was also cautious at the length of time prior to the start of the 2022 H&A season.

“Once again it’s only the pre-season & we’ll use him where we need him, but we’d like to play him more in the midfield.” Longmire added.
Heeney averaged 15.9 Disposals, 5.7 Marks, 2.0 Tackles & 1.7 Goals from 21 games for Sydney in 2021.

Fantasy Impact: A move into more of a midfield role for Isaac Heeney would certainly provide an opportunity to increase his fantasy scoring output, he averaged 77.2pts from 21 games in 2021.

The available opportunities in the midfield & the positive outlook from John Longmire do align for Heeney, he was used at minimal centre bounces in 2021 so his 2022 role could be a mix of outside/inside midfield.

His role would be a critical watch during pre-season games, his fantasy scoring potential could easily exceed his 2021 output.

Heeney would be a strong consideration at Round 1 in season long fantasy, there will be more information available throughout his pre-season on his exact midfield role & potential centre bounce usage.

The annual conundrum about picking Heeney has started early this year :ROFLMAO:

Do we believe Horse or not.... history says no we can't but Heeney is such an elite talent he has to be considered at 454K

With Hewett & Dawson gone along with Kennedy on his last legs, you can see the opportunity for more midfield minutes is certainly there for him & it must be appealing for the swans to have another classy player joining Mills in the engine room.

Thoughts @wogitalia?
Has there ever been a season when Heeney isn't going to "play more midfield" ...

I don't have the picker, but conservatively at the moment I think I'll have a forward line something like:

Dunkley, Duncan, XXX, Cogs, Rookie, Hollands (Rookie, Rookie)

Where XXX is your ~$450k pick.

How would you rank the likely starters of Butters, Heeney or T Thomas?

Butters > Heeney > T Thomas for mine, but as you can see in my sig I am a touch bias

Training very well currently, with Boak & Gray getting to late stage of their careers I can see him getting more time in the middle.

Before injury struck last season he started with scores of 98, 163, 55 (v WCE at Optus, think he was tagged) & 96

Here is an article from last year showing his importance to Port :-

Also that 96 came from about 3 and a 1/2 quarters I believe!

That's a very interesting article with some great stats. Maybe the most interesting line is the one that says he is 'perhaps their best player'.

I mean, the rest must be pretty average. Wines only won a brownlow right?

Thoughts on going heavy midfield/ruck and simply finding value back and forward?

I think Whitfield is a lock. Maybe even as D1.
I also like Treloar / Duncan as F1/2.

Then we have some "potential" bargains: Milera, Marchbank, Cognilio, Rayner. And hopefully at least one starting rookie on ground both back and forward. With some others with enough JS for the bench.

So that leaves the fillers. D2, D3 and F3. If you want to load up in the midfield and ruck these need to be midpricers.

A few I am considering: Day (back), Bramble (back/mid) and Gulden (forward). Is rolling the dice with these three as D2, D3, F3 madness? Or other similar players who may jump out in the preseason.

Kind of over being so standard and conservative each year. Need to roll the dice a little perhaps ...

I think there might be something in that Hipwood injury - Daniher was definitely offering ruck chopout early in the season and it maybe seems that Big O played a lot better when he could just grind along and attend all the contests.

That said, they did replace Hipwood with Fullarton who did some ruck relief as well, but maybe not as effectively as Daniher?
I have only just started reading all of this - will take some time to get sorted - up to 23. From memory, early on, didn't NBig O struggle with an Ankle/shin injury for several or more weeks?

Anyway, I've popped him into my non-forget and set ruck... Can't see myself going the Grundy Gawne option again. Better spent elsewhere?

Looks like a few good (although expensive) rookie mids is all.

I am somewhat puzzled by the amount of times Caleb Marchbank is mentioned or appears in early draft teams. I know he has shown ability in the past. I started him in 2018 when he scored a ton first up but then injuries and mixed form came back to haunt him. What do people think he will ave? Looking for 80? Injury risk?

He's very cheap. That's the only reason I can think of, there's often only a few defender rookies, so he will possibly be one of the cheapest players to play R1. I don't expect enough from him to even justify that 200K+ price - can find rookies on other lines instead.

Not for me. Without seeing all prices, at this stage I'm unlikely to pick any Carlton player except for Walsh (and he is only a maybe).

Yeah I'm struggle to get interest in Marchbank, can't see I'd get too many more points out of him compared to a Gould type (if plays) at $80k less.

Walsh was possibly the only Blue I'd look at also, maybe even Hewitt depending on role/fitness/structure but also looking at Walsh's form against the first few teams I may even let him slide.
