Thats pretty much where my 4 iron is at the moment. I find the challenge is more just taking into account the wind and the lie. I just use an app on my phone that provides distances to front, middle and back of the green. Getting in the habit of using the back of the green distance more, unless there is trouble over the back.
That's it mate, I think when contemplating distances, a lot of golfers make the mistake of assuming they're going to execute perfect contact and the ball will travel as far as they can hit that particular iron. Most amateur golfers mis hit a lot of the time so why not allow for that through your round in general and don't put so much pressure on ourselves...so why not take an extra club ?
It also allows for a smoother easier swing, taking an extra club.
That's why I do the, take an extra club policy, with irons, and always putt and chip it a bit harder than my instinct tells me, because I'd rather see the ball go past the hole rather than short all the time, at least you get a look at it going past, and sometimes you make it.
