Lions defender Alex Witherden’s slated move to West Coast is in limbo despite the two clubs essentially agreeing on his trade value.

Foxfooty.com.au understands the size of his contract and who pays for it is the sticking point and increases the chances of the 22-year-old remaining in Queensland.

Witherden has two years remaining on a Brisbane contract worth more than what West Coast is willing to pay.

The former Geelong Falcon is assessing whether he would be willing to accept a significant wage reduction, or stay at the Lions where he loves his teammates and the club and fight for a place in Chris Fagan’s best 22.

Trades are flowing now.
BRISBANE has signed injury-plagued Geelong forward Nakia Cockatoo.
The former No.10 draft pick moves to the Lions in exchange for a future third-round selection which is tied to Melbourne.
Brisbane took a chance on injury-plagued Geelong forward Lincoln McCarthy and turned his career around. Now they are doing the same with his former teammate.
The pair have the same manager, with Cockatoo well aware of Brisbane's exemplary medical history.

Interesting, Allen Christensen is another that springs to mind on the Geelong => Brisbane path.

Hopefully he is still a mid/fwd next year with what Brisbane has been able to do with injury prone players McCarthy,Birchall. Got their work cut out with Daniher and Cockatoo. Was a 148,200 mid/fwd this year so hopefully he becomes a 123k mid/fwd.

Good point. I think I had McCarthy in early 2020 drafts, so I reckon he’ll occupy a similar spot in my 2021 draft unless he’s clearly out of contention for R1 for fitness reasons. At that sort of price he’s pretty interchangeable with a less proven entity anyway, so it doesn’t really impact structure if he doesn’t get up (or doesn’t get picked!).

Means the Eagles are all in on Bailey Williams now... Expect him to play regularly next season. No choice but to get games into him and have him parter Nic Nat week in week out.
