AFL club list size numbers for 2021 are reportedly set to be cut to a minimum of 37 and a maximum of 44 players (including rookies).
The Age reporter Michael Gleeson has written the AFL is close to an agreement with the AFL Players’ Association on the numbers, which would cut primary list players by two and rookie numbers by one.

Further meetings between the AFL and AFLPA were due to be held today - foxfooty.com.au understands the final numbers have not yet been confirmed with the AFLPA.
The cuts are less extensive than many in the industry first predicted and feared, with the ability of the league and players getting a season away a huge benefit.

Detailed in The Age report are specifics surrounding how a list could be compromised - if clubs have seven rookies (four Category A and three Category B) then they can only have 37 players on their primary list.

Should a club have 36 primary listed players, it must then have at least one rookie to reach the minimum list size of 37 - there had been no requirement previously for a club to have rookie listed players.

In terms of salary cap cuts, the report suggests a cut of roughly 10 per cent is in store, with one per cent of that applying to retirement funds.

It’s also suggested the AFL is likely to leave the application of the cuts to clubs, rather than imposing a flat reduction rate across the competition, something that has irked clubs who will have to renegotiate contracts.

Sounding as though Ben Brown and pick 28 to Melbourne for pick 26 and either pick 31 or 33. Also a swap of later picks which will possibly be future picks.

The Dees got Preuss for pick 31 so if the above happens then it’s effectively Preuss for Brown. Big win for Melbourne in my eyes.

One of the better ins in recent memory value wise. Reckon we’ll talk about North's treatment of BBB for a few years yet. I know I certainly will, wasn’t too long ago he was the best full forward going around. To get him for 31 when the punters are talking about 2 first for Cameron is unreal.

What a waste for the Roos. At his best he would be worth a first rounder no doubt, but with low motivation and being moved on his value is slashed. Just shows that keeping the list happy, uninjured and playing well is often as important as what you pay your players.

Had a "discussion" with a Melb supporter last week. He was suggesting we go hard after Jack Higgins, as our Forward line needs help. I told him, the last thing we need to do is squeeze in another 16-20 goal Fwd, we need a genuine 40+ goal Fwd!
..... and look, we got one! 🎉👌😍

It also means we have basically checked out of this years draft.. any chance we redraft some players we delisted?
Can't see us doing much in this draft with what we have left. Could be smart trading out of what is essentially the most compromised draft in history with all the NGA, Father/Son picks plus the lack of football the young potential draftee's had in 2020. It's a real crapshoot this year.

The downside is after trading out of last years draft to nab Kelly... We are creating an age gap in our list which is not ideal going into the future. We need to really hit the draft hard next year, which appears what we intend on doing.

Reid, Mitch O'Neill, Treacy, Schofield, Watson, Brayshaw are all gone. As is Hickey who's off to Sydney. That leaves Ah Chee, Hutchings, Vardy & Jetta without contracts.... Vardy will get a 1yr deal now Hickey is gone, Have heard Ah Chee has been offered a F/T job with the Wirrapunda Foundation and a spot playing for the WAFL Eagles... with the chance of getting rookie listed again with the new mini drafts after rounds 4,8,12 or whatever they are that are being introduced next season. Jetta & Hutchings I think will be delisted.

I really hope we pick-up Alec Waterman again as a delisted FA, he could be very handy with the way he played in the WAFL this year.

If we pick up Witherden cheap, along with the Zac Langdon pick-up... and the extra draft picks next year... I think we would have done very well with Hickey being the only real cost. Both Witherden & Langdon fill Best 22 needs and should slot in well.
