Ireland: William O’Connor and Steve Lennon

Runners up in 2019 defeating England, Austria and Netherlands en route to losing to Scotland in the final. First and second round exits in all other stagings of the event. Both players recorded their best (or equal best) run at the 2022 World Championships with third round exits. Should be one of the closest matches of the first round against the Canadians.

0-10 at the World Cup which is the worst record of any participating nation. Reliant on miscount after miscount on the De Sousa throw to cause the Portuguese any trouble.

Japan: Toro Suzuki and Tomoya Gota

Both players making their World Cup debut and the second year in a row without Seigo Asada. Japan reached the quarter finals and semi finals in 2018 and 2019 with Asada. Very tough ask against the number four seed in Belgium who will be looking to make amends for their early exit last year which was the first time since 2010 that Belgium have failed to reach the quarter finals.

Latvia: Madars Razma and Nauris Gleglu

A very nice opening round draw for Latvia against Hungary and the experience of tour card holder and world number forty two Madars Razma should be enough to get the win.

And how could I end this without showing this superb nine darter.

Lithuania: Darius Labanauskas and Mindaugas Barauskas

No changes once again to the Lithuanian pairing and this is the first time they have faced a seeded nation in the first round. The format lends to surprise results but this would require both players to be on their A games with the Aussies both off the boil which we all hope will be a highly improbable result.

New Zealand: Ben Robb and Warren Parry

The 58 year old Parry has qualified for the World Championships on four occasions but has failed to win a match. His career highlight on the PDC stage was his remarkable comeback against M Van Gerwen at the 2014 Sydney Darts Masters coming from 5-1 legs down to win 6-5 (featured below). He has been described as New Zealand’s answer to Phil Taylor. Robb is currently ranked number one on the New Zealand circuit.

Overall record of 1-7 at the World Cup and hard to see them defeating Wales or making it to the Quarter Finals to warrant a selection.

Poland: Krzysztof Ratajski and Sebastian Bialecki

Very impressive showing from Bialecki at the UK Open earlier this year which included a run to the Quarter Finals ad a nine darter from the 18 year old, as well as currently being ranked inside the top 10 on the development tour Order of merit (players aged between 16-23). Should be a close match against USA and are capable of causing an upset against Belgium in the second round.

Portugal: Jose De Sousa and Vitor Jeronimo

Should be a comfortable win against the Italians unless Jose miscounts On the doubles. Tougher ask against Scotland and the experience of the Scots should be too much if they are in form. A preview of what Jose could have in store for us.

South Africa: Devon Petersen and Stefan Vermaak

Devon is a fantastic ambassador for African darts and earlier this year launched the Devon Petersen Darts Academy in Cape Town.

Great attitude, brilliant walk on and occasionally appears in the commentary box for great value. Fantastic to see his career resurgence in 2020 and 2021 winning a European tour event and a few deep runs in the big tournaments. Vermaak makes his World Cup debut at the age of 18 with his highest average at the Qualifiers for the World Cup around the high 70’s.

They draw an experienced Swedish line up and if successful in RD1, face the Australian juggernaut of Heta and Whitlock in RD2.

Spain: Jose Justicia and Tony Martinez

Jose was successful in earning a tour card at Q-School earlier this year thanks to winning the final on Day 1 of Q-School and is currently recording his highest ever average on the tour (91.03) just below the tour average of 92.37. 52 year old Martinez also earned a Tour Card at Q-School by finishing fourth on the European Q-School Order of Merit. They face the home nation (Germany) in RD1.

Not even 2 and playing in the World Cup. That is impressive! :p

Thanks for all these write ups, they are very informative, probably will be handy for later rounds (I'll stick with my initial picks for the early rounds in any case, I was glad to see others picking similarly to a lot of them which suggests they should do OK).

Sweden: Daniel Larsson and Johan Engstrom

Johan “The Sweet Ferret” appears on the Baltic and Nordic tour of PDC European events and has won 2 titles under the BDO (British Darts Organistation)/ WDF (World Darts Federation) back in 2011 (Estonia Open) and 2012 (Finnish Open). Daniel Larsson has also tasted success in the BDO/WDF with tournament wins between 2014 to 2018 and his career highlight in the PDC was defeating Robert Thornton in the first round of the 2019 World Championships. Should be a very close match against South Africa but once again the Aussies should be too strong of an opposition in the second round.
