G'day Rowsus

Before trades I am currently only fielding 15 this week. I am tossing up between trading either Lever for B Smith or Lumumba for Murphy. I have 11 trades left and most of my rookie have been culled and the ones that are left have plenty money still to make. Which way would you go?

Hi Dee,
If you had less trades, or more upgrades to make, I would say Lever to Smith, but given your good position in regard to those two things, I'd go Lumumba to Murphy.

Hi Rowsus, hope you're travelling well up there, was wondering if you could throw a glace over my team and team notes and send any tips you've got my way.

Fwd: Dusty, Swan, Mitchell, Gray, The Bont, Franklin (McClean, McInnes)

Rock solid with mediocre rookie cover, possible weak link in Bontempelli with his scores trending down a bit but still ok holding down F6.

Mid: Pendles, Dangerfield, Sloane, Fyfe, Beams, Hannebury, Miller, Boston (Rocky, Steele, McKenzie)

Pretty good here with Rocky to come back in and one more upgrade next week where Touk Touk does his caterpillar into a butterfly trick and magically turns into Priddis to create an all premium starting midfield. Bench cover good with decent cash cow potential in Boston and Steele.

Ruck: Goldy, Jacobs (Read)

A B++ grade here at the moment with the clear number 1 ruck and Jacobs who's been a bit up and down but a long way from terrible.

Defence: McDonald, Hibbard, Hooker, Newnes, Saad, Hamling (Beasly, Lever)

The leaky boat of my team with too many holes to plug now. Keeping Saad and looking at one more upgrade, probably Houli but need Lever to start playing again and make some fast cash so i can offload him. Bench cover average at best.

Trades budget: 9 (+$422k). 1 Mid upgrade, 1 Def upgrade, 3 LTI's and 4 (x2) rookie downgrades/upgrades, all subject to to the tiddlywinks of the SC gods.

Many thanks as always,

Drew.

So Row, just to confirm i accidentally left corey ellis on the field this week and have newnes as mid emergency i will get his score right? i have 19 on field playing this week and all my other mids are playing.
'If you have further available players in any position during these multi-bye rounds, you may set Emergencies for those positions as usual. Emergencies will continue to replace non-starting players in your Starting 22 with the usual rules, in the same position (including any 'bye' player that you may have left in your Starting 22) and their score will only count if it is in your Best 18.'

I'm doing ok, thanks Drew. I hope you're doing ok, too. I'm looking forward to landing in Aus in 6 days. It will be great to have 18 days there. :D

Amazing how "rock solid" goes to problematical in one night! I think there is more to mitchell being subbed than first meets the eye. The problem is, until we know what is happening with Buddy, and if anything is happening with Mitchell, it is hard to know what to recommend.

Mid: Pendles, Dangerfield, Sloane, Fyfe, Beams, Hannebury, Miller, Boston (Rocky, Steele, McKenzie)

Probably better than "pretty good". Much better than my mid line up, and Priddis will complete it nicely.

Ruck: Goldy, Jacobs (Read)

A B++ grade here at the moment with the clear number 1 ruck and Jacobs who's been a bit up and down but a long way from terrible.
I'm a bit worried about Jacobs draw. No games against Carl/Stk/GWS, so no easy 130/140 scores, asides from that, if you were going to try and carry two Rucks through, without cover, it should be Goldy and Sauce.

I think you need to look at two upgrades here. Maybe play the patience game with the sceond one, and wait for those secondary cows to start mooing.

I'm guessing you have 13 trades left, not 9. Your whole immediate trading plan depends on the fate of Buddy, and whether you hold or trade him. Unless you wanted some Trading ideas for this week, I will come back to it again next week, when we know buddy's fate.

Confirmed. Newnes comes into your best 18 calculations.

Hi Row,
I really appreciate the effort and time you put in, not just for a reply to my post but everyone's on this thtead, some great feedback here.

After a quick chat to McIntosh we have decided in the interest of both parties we WILL part ways. The "Brown' example was a good point, and one I hadn't considered. (Was all tied up thinking of good downgrades to make more $$ or upgrades to a Prem.

Saad was never going anyway, (unless unjured). Tarrant got the flick. Montagna came into the Mids. (make or break as a POD)

That leaves me to carefully cull some of the remaining rookies. I was in the top 5000 overall, but have been in decline through some suspensions and injury. If I don't halt the slide I will have to concentrate on my leagues only for this year. Hence the reason for some advice.

Again, thanks for giving up your time to reply.

Hey Rowsus; getting this question in early; is it worth swapping Mason Cox for Shaun McKernan? McKernan will sit at R3 and switch with Max Gawn at F6. NicNat and Goldy are my R1 and R2. I won't be able to much scoring with McKernan; but he will provide cover if both 1 ruck is out and Gawn needs to cover up forward. Secondly, if both Rucks are out, I have more flexibility with replacements than I would if I had Cox/Gawn.

Rowsus I am looking to upgrade both Oxley and Saad (probably one this week and one the following as I am going Sloane to JPK this week).

Just cant work out the backs and interested in your opinion on who will generate the most points from here until end of year? Tough question I know so any guide in this area would be appreciated.

Hi Rowsus, I'm one of those guys who traded in Sloane before this round and now have to trade him out.
I have 510k to play around with.
Who to get?
Obviously I'm looking at Sidebottom,Barlow,Benell or even big Ruf.
Who do you see averaging more for the year out of those 4 players? It's a real head scratcher this trade for me as I only have the 510k to play with
Cheers

Hey Rowsus;

I'm going to swap Oxley for a midfielder, and JPK looks like a prime candidate; but I've seen thoughts that his low scores are linked with the resurgence of Tom Mitchell; do you think that JPK's good score last week was due to Mitchell having a stinker; and if Mitchell holds his spot and plays well, JPK will suffer - or on the other hand, if, heaven forbid, Mitchell is dropped, JPK will become a prime midfielder?

Many owners are lamenting the performance of JPK and Selwood; I'm not considering bringing Selwood in, but with 97 and 114 in his last 2, has JPK turned the corner, or am I better off looking elsewhere? (Although Selwood did score 122 then 89, before dropping off with 74. On the other hand, JPK has has raised the bat 9 times to Selwood's 4 this year)

I like JPK because it leaves a good chunk of cash for an upgrade to Ablett in a couple of weeks; but I could get someone like Shiel or Sidebottom instead.

Hi Rowsus,

Just wondering your thoughts on both Hanneberry and Parker.
These are the two guys I am considering bringing in for Sloane atm (yep like many I got him last week :( ).

Hi Rowsus

So I just traded Sloane in last week, and this week he has to go. I also have Buddy to stock away due to upcoming suspension. Definitely had a chance to go for the ball and not the player... so 2 weeks at a minimum I would say.

I have many options this week to consider. With Oxley's price set to stagnate, do I upgrade him now?

With 11 trades and 23k in the bank these are the options I have this week:

Option 1:
Sloane to McLean (via Steele to mid)
Oxley to Shaw
Completes my backline, but I will have to use McLean or Lonie to cover for Buddy when he is suspended. Also will have 200k left for impending upgrades

Option 2:
Lonie to McLean
Oxley to Shaw
Won't have any money left, but gives me the option of keeping Sloane on the bench and gives me more time to see if I should get rid of him or not.

Option 3:
Lonie to McLean
Sloane to Deledio
This allows me to have a complete forward line while Buddy is gone, and have Bont cover for mids when Buddy is back. Keeping Oxley and Saad to cover D6 while waiting for further downgrades to get Shaw.

So its basically Shaw and McLean Vs Deledio and Oxley for me.

What do you think?

Hi Rowsus,

Appreciate your view on a backline decision. I've narrowed it down to a 1 in 1 out choice ... either Pittard or Oxley get the chop; to be replaced by Rance or Easton Wood. I brought in Pittard on a punt/whim on the back of his early season swingman form, and quickly came to regret it. Oxley I don't mind as Pies fan myself, but will he begin to fade and see less game time. On the incoming side, Rance is agreeably cheap at 401k and could reasonably be expected to deliver 90+ from here on in. Easton Wood looks a player in form though and could be a nice POD punt.

Cheers and thanks in advance ...

Hi Rowsus,

How do you rate the following players for the remainder of the season, likely average, potential to miss games, value, etc?

Daniel Hannebery
Dayne Beams
Matthew Priddis
David Mundy

FYI I still plan to bring in Brad Ebert in round 16 as per my original plan.

Hi Rowsus

Here we are at Rd 14 and I find myself in Struggletown and seeking some second opinion on my team. Usually I have some game plan to work on but have I have arrived at this point with no plan. It is my worst year since I started and I will be lucky to finish in the top 20k which is a bit of a bugger but I know a lot of other coaches are struggling as well.

Here is my team

Def
H Shaw Hurley Hibberd Simpson Oxley Rampe
Sub McKenzie Byrne

Mid
Fyfe D Beams Pendles Heppell Jelwood B Harvey Sloane Sidebottom
Sub Boston Glenn Lambert

Ruck
Jacobs NicNat Sub O’Brien

Fwd
D Martin Swan R Gray Motlop Bont Gawn
Sub Steele Lamb

First I have only 33k left but I did always intend to trade during the byes, I just used more cash than I wanted.

Second I have 6 trades left which I suspect is 2 or 3 less than many other coaches.

Third I have no immediate rookie worth trading for cash within the next 2 or 3 rounds.

Fourth what to do with an injured Sloane and a Sidebottom playing a different role that is affecting his scoring. With trades in short supply I think Boston may need to fill the breach for Sloane but unsure where to go with Sidebottom. I have had Jelwood and Harvey for only a short time and think they can turn it around in the second half of the season. Harvey will end up in the Fwd line at some stage.

I am conscious of Ablett returning soon and expect a drop in price and I want to be within striking range. Even if he scores 3 x 100 in a row he should drop to 590-595k.

So……any advice on what I should be looking to do over the next few rounds will be appreciated. I only aim at finishing the highest I can so leagues aren't a consideration. Likewise any other coaches with any thoughts feel free to comment.

Hey Eagling,
even though you are in an enviable position with what could be considered a complete team, and a good amount of trades left, I can't see this being your best move. Yes, Gawn could disappear, and yes, it is in the realms of possibilities that one of Goldy or NicNat could be out, when you need Gawn on the field in the Fwd line, but to spend $153k and a trade waiting for those circumstances seems very wasteful, when you could be strengthening your lower end or bench cover on the main (non-Rucking) lines. You have Ruck cover, where many have none. I would just Wear it, if your worst case scenario pops up. I can't see you getting the value from the trade and/or dollars to warrant doing this.

Good players bounce back, so JPK might have turned a corner. He might only have turned it to be 105 rather than 112+ though. Given the quantity of D/M's you have sitting in your Midfield, Oxley to a Mid is a smart move. JPK does represent value for dollars, but given your team has many M5-8 types, and only Fyfe and Pendles in the M1-4 types, I would be looking to spend a bit more, and get a Beams type, that sits more comfortably at M3, than JPK appears to this season.

Mudflap, I will say Shaw, then in no particular order, Yeo, Houli, Enright, Murphy, Laird. Hodge will be one of the better averages, and may sneak into the aggregates, but I will bet on him getting managed late in the season.
