Hats off to Rowan Marshall.

His opponent in Tom Bellchambers was 101 games his senior, but the youngster performed admirably in his first game of the year to be among one of the Saints’ most important players.

While he may have lost the hit-out count against the far more experienced Bellchambers 21-41, Marshall’s mobility and enduring run were defining traits which saw him gain an edge against his opponent.

The 23-year-old finished with an impressive 15 disposals (13 conteted), five marks, eight tackles and a game-high seven clearances, with his influence across the ground often the starting point for the Saints’ successes over the course of the night.

I read that he finished the game with some strapping to his calf, can't remember if it was on twitter, just hold until there's more info.

MEDICAL ROOM
Essendon: Stringer went off in the third term after hurting his right ankle but came back on to the ground later that quarter. McGrath lay on the ground early in the final term after copping a huge, and fair, hit from Parker, but eventually jogged off the ground and came back later on.

St Kilda: Ruckman Rowan Marshall went to the bench in the fourth quarter with a right calf problem, but he returned to the field.

So it looks like almost everyone dodged a bullet in not starting Tom McDonald:

59, 51, 26

He could get pretty cheap soon ... I guess the question is whether he’s still a premium forward candidate, or whether Melbourne’s drop off/Hogan’s departure is an ongoing issue for his scoring?

He’s 26 and has had only one injury stint in five years. Had the 7th highest average last year, amongst forward-eligible players.

He was one who I was interested in tracking before the game with his BE , could get down to low $ 300's similar to JRoo last season.

Could even be a straight swap with Drew or Parker if the timing works out.

That could be very handy if so - sounds like he may miss with that ankle though, from a non owner’s perspective he would probably drop more if he kept playing.

I wonder whether he’s a shot to spend some time back if things aren’t working in defense? Makes it harder to see who kicks the Dees goals but that wasn’t an issue for them last year, and they seem to be really struggling down back from the bits I saw.

Owned him last year , loved watching him play.

Seemed to play a lot more wing last season , Goody did say he played wing Q2 last night.

People saying Melbourne looked slow , yet suggesting Preuss comes in , thought he had the mobility of the Galloping Gasometer.

I actually had Melbourne as flag favourites , best ruck and mids in the comp , missing 4-6 & 2-6 underdone , maybe they are not as good as everyone and they think they are , and need to get back to work work work to achieve , if the defence is leaking too many goals from too many entries I would suggest that they need to start 2 way running a lot more.

Probably at this stage
1. Danger (125+)
2. Heeney (101-105)
3. Kelly (103-105)
4. Boak (98-102)
5. Gray (96-100)
6. Menegola (96-100)

Gunston, Hawkins, Gresham, Dunkley also candidates for me.

Really difficult still to work this one out with any confidence. Outside of Danger so far no one is jumping out as a must have to me. Well done to those who got on Boak early and if he avoids getting the tag he’ll have a great year (actually think his fortunes might be tied to Rocky).

If anyone can give a guaranteed F3 please let me know. I have Mundy to deal with and either today or next week and let Telly, Boak and Rozee slide past out of want to not compound that early selection mistake.

If Worpel can continue to stay within 10 ppg of the eventual f3-4 I’d be very tempted also.

what are peoples thoughts on the Hoff this year? Will be pretty cheap in a couple of weeks. Is he worth a F6/F7 spot to provide Ruck cover?

My thoughts are, targeting an F7 this early on seems strange to me. I'm sure if you're really interested he's still available around the byes. Wouldn't be going near him at the moment.

Depends on how you value ruck cover insurance. Could easy be worth 60 - 100 points pre bye just covering a single week out (assuming forward rookie cover)

The premium Rucks were ridiculously durable last year compared to average. Odds are history will not repeat hence hoff he is on my early trade target list.

For all we know a ruck rookie comes into the equation though. Fair call, but not for me as yet!

I was more interested in what people think he will score from here... is the last 2 rounds the norm or do people think he can average 90-100 from here

I'd say he'll average low 90s. I think you've already missed his biggest score for the year, FWIW.
