Houston vs Dawson

People seem to be favouring the former, just trying to work out if it's as clear as it appears. From my read:
  • Houston has a bigger ceiling, but it seems pretty dependent on the old "getting more midfield minutes" chestnut
  • Whereas Dawson's 95 average post bye last season came from natural improvement, playing in the same position he will be this year, with the same personnel around (ie. Lloyd wasn't missing games to bump up his scoring)
  • They are both 22 and drafted in the same year, but Houston has had more games into him early in his career.
Anything else to swing it one way or the other?
Bye round is the big kicker for me, hard to justify Dawson alongside the rest of the players from that round whereas Houston doesn’t have that problem.

I also believe McVeigh missed games that coincide with Dawson’s increased scoring, though I’d have to check to be certain.

With J McVeigh: 73.8 from 5
Without J McVeigh: 90.27 from 15

There we go. Everything points to an increase for him this year. I just can’t quite fit him in, it’s going to hurt if he comes out swinging this year, I reckon I’ve been pumping him up for close to 18 months.

Might have to make room for him

Dawson for me. Similar reasons to those posted, I rate him, but struggling with fitting everyone I want in already, otherwise he would be in my team. I feel he is more likely to do well than Houston, seems to be more of a trend that way in any case.

I’ve sat with Houston since SC open but now thinking of dropping Heeney (f3) for Dawson (F3) + cash for some ? higher priced rookies then possible. Also allows the swing with Hill and brander. Dawson vs heeney?

Sounds like it could work.

Jelly/dunkley and Dawson (fwd) vs Oliver and Heeney
I currently have Oliver and Heeney but am toying with Dawson. I'd probably keep Oliver regardless though.
I was going to post a reply, but Leroy said pretty much exactly what I was going to. Oliver I prefer to either Jelly or Dunkley, Dawson and Heeney are similar, just depends which line you want the player on.

Gawn and Heeney vs Nic Nait and Danger
Gawn and Heeney for me. Gawn and Grundy are locked in as my two rucks, an injury is the only thing that would change them.
Agreed with @Ironhawk. Can't see myself not starting Gawn (and Grundy), where's at this stage can't see myself starting with NN or Danger.

Macrae & Merrett

Vs

Josh Kelly & Oliver

Prefer Oliver to Zerrett. There’s little reason why Kelly can’t outscore Macrae, especially with a full preseason, but you have to prepare yourself for a possible injury and a trade, which is worth a lot of points in itself.

I'm having trouble accepting Macrae as an elite supercoacher to my own detriment. I'm not questioning the scoring or whether he deserves it. I just want my superstars to play like superstars and sometimes I don't even notice him on the ground. I keep thinking the opposition haven't noticed him yet either and they will catch up with him at some point.

Kelly and Oliver for me but take it with a grain of salt.

I don’t reckon Macrae should be a part of any x v y personally. Been the best player in the league for close to 2 years now IMO.

That being said, a fit Kelly is one of the few who can match his output and I much prefer Oliver to Merrett so Kelly and Oliver for me.

If you can fit them, Macrae and Oliver. I currently have both nearly locked in. Kelly I'm prepared to bypass this year until he can show a consistent season - I may change my mind around the byes depending how everything else goes. Merrett is fine, but I think Oliver is the better selection.

Yeah I have this gut feeling that Macrae drops off to 115 and I think it's for that exact reason - he just doesn't blow me away like the other midfielders, but I don't think that gut feeling is really accurate. He is just a huge accumulator but an accumulator who tackles and kicks with great efficiency, without looking damaging.

I don't know if Macrae is a must have given the amount of top end midfielders this year, he also started last year a bit slow and people were able to pick him up a bit cheaper, there's a lot fo luck and a lot of moving parts involved. My intention is definitely to start him.

Yeah he did start last year a little bit slowly but the year before he averaged 130 odd up until the bye. Will undoubtedly be cheaper at some point but that’s potentially a lot of points to miss out on for 10 weeks.

How do you feel about Cogs this year mate? You seem to be in the market for a budget M5 and I would have thought he’d be in the mix to fill that Zerrett spot.
