Yeah he's shown the last two years when playing midfield that he will score pretty decently, still when he's played half-forward or in the pocket, where his x-factor once shined through, he's proved very frustrating. Could be a very good upgrade target once he gets going this year.
Heard a presser from Hinks ... not that I take much real notice ... what I took away from it ...

- Wanted to keep Polec but couldn't justify matching the price being offered by other clubs ...
- Had no issues trading Chad ... his best is good enough but we just couldn't get it out of him ...

Take from that what you want .... hangs my head in shame that we traded Jnr Burger over "Hammy" concerns from memory .... gee that turned out well .. for the other club !!

Junior Burger? Burgoyne I’m assuming, only looking like a 400 gamer, should listened to Mark Williams and made him captain ?

sounds like a bit of make believe to me, how could you not want Wingard? More valuable than Polec in my opinion.

Another thing to note is he rocked up to pre season well oberweight and was constantly niggled with injuries to begin last year.

As soon as he went into the midfield (when he was fit enough, potentially would’ve started here round 1 or earlier than round 12 anyway had he not been overweight or lacking fitness), he was a jet and averaged 103 for the last 11 games.
I heard that too but I was referring to the season before as well and also in other seasons he's been inconsistent as a forward, sometimes looking like he can be a 100+ player just as a forward playing a bit of midfield, and other times looking like he's not even playing.

I don't have an opinion either way on this ....
I just mean if Hinkley was happy to let him go why did they demand so much for him to be traded. Was that also said after he also came out and had a go at the club?

Fair enough. What do you think of the replacement kid tough, Ryan Burton? Bet he looks better through teal tinted glasses now. These things do sometimes have a funny way of coming up smelling like roses though.

Not sure yet... got a stack of players in his position but must admit he looked good at HAW. Only thing that concerns me is he never wanted to be traded and in his position why would you want to be ..... HAW must have a big opinion of Chad though to let him go ...

TBH I think a lot of his comments are huff and puff ... Chad said he wanted to leave ... can think of a few reasons why ... so to me a bit of face saving presser exercise in progress to appease supporters ... got to justify it somehow ,,,

How about not picking Billings last year and still not wanting to pick him this year because I spent all of last year laughing at everyone in my leagues who had him and would cost them h2h’s.
That is a totally valid reason for not picking him up! :ROFLMAO:

23yo who has played 85 games and was a top first-round draft pick who averaged 84 in his second year is the break-out zone player I normally look for. His progression until last year looked exactly like the kind of player who would make the next step. Plenty of players look like making that step and then don't, so I guess it's a matter of whether you think there were extenuating circumstances or he just doesn't have what it takes. Something was really off at the Saints last year, particularly in the first half of the season, and Billings was right where the stink was coming out. Confidence way off, didn't know or feel comfortable in his role, and his performances showed. Definitely reasonable to think he can't turn it round but for mine he's extremely talented and capable of making the next step and it's something I want to bet on.
I don't disagree with any of this - and most of this added to why I started with Billings last year. But at the risk of sounding like a Supercoacher scorned - I won't be touching him this year; and it's the unquantifiable factors that really get me... You could see it all over his face, when things weren't going right, he was sooking and looked like it would get worse. In pressure situations he went missing. When he had an important kick for goal he absolutely melted and didn't get close. It was that sort of stuff that made me think this guy just isn't cut out for taking the step up to A grade.

I owned Wingard since about round 12 last year and it was magnificent.

If healthy and he is playing in the midfield he is an automatic 100 scorer.
Clarko has been a huge fan of Wingard since he coached the 2014 international rules team. Around that time he was asked in an interview if he could recruit anyone to the Hawks who would it be? Wingard was the answer.

From all reports he won't be named round 1 with a niggling calf injury. Also, his forward pressure was the main reason the Hawks recruited him, not as a midfielder. With Titch out I can see him being thrown in there from time to time but I imagine they'd prefer to cover the midfield in other ways and use Chad down front the way Cyril was.

Definitely agree with the observation but I'm willing to chalk it up to youth and inexperience. Hoping it has helped him and he'll be able to forge through the tough moments better this year. Don't blame anyone for not wanting to make the same bet though.

Yes it’s a debate around his attitude and/or willingness to step up. As well as his role.

I totally understand why people don’t want to go there. For me it’s a punt I’m willing to take pending rookies and whether a value punt is needed. Plus I don’t like the more expensive options bar Menegola and even there I think he can be purchased cheaper later. All the forwards bar danger are prone to inconsistency IMO or have question marks re age.

I’m not sure forward pressure or defensive game is his strongest point, has the tools to do it though

I haven't really had my say on the Wingard saga as of yet but I spose now is as good a time as any.

I don't claim to have more inside info than other supporters but I do have a close friend that works in administration for the club who relays the info he gets to me and I still have a few loose ties to some people I met when I played for the maggies as a U/16/18 who I have a chat with from time to time, make of that what you will.

My take on the Wingard situation is that port very much wanted him to stay on their terms and Chad wanted to stay on his terms, make no mistake that he did not want to be traded, at least in the beginning. He was up for free agency at the end of 2019 and did not want to sign any form of extension as a result of that, approaching deadlines cause desperation in many cases as I'm sure many of us are aware.

Port put what most would think was a fairly generous offer to him and he was advised by his management that he could potentially get a much larger sum if he were to move though free agency at the end of this season, which could spike ports offer. As a result port told him to test his market value and then come back to the table to renegotiate. Ports reasoning was that he had come back at the start of 2018 massively overweight and until he could show he could commit (2019 pre season) they weren't willing to match the numbers being bandied about and Hinkley told him this flat out. If he was worth what him/his managers thought he was there was room for movement on ports side. It was always intended to be a testing of his value, never and actual "go shop yourself around" He took offence to this and that's when it all broke down and the rest played out as it did.

Chad was always a fantastic individual whenever I had the pleasure of talking to
him, did more than his share in regards to community events and such and always seemed genuinely happy to be doing so.

Where he failed was in his investment to the team, had almost no interaction with teammates outside of the club and spend most away games locked in in his room by himself. The importance of that is highly debatable but I think it was hugely overvalued by those in charge. They want complete buy in and with that comes forming relationships with teammates outside of training & game day, which he either tried to do and failed, or didn't try in the first place, either way it doesn't matter. He had no personal connections to his teammates, only forced connections which makes it much easier to pack up and move.

All this talk of Fortnite addiction and such is utter rubbish, what he does in his spare time is his choice and shouldn't have ever been in the media in the first place. You take away normal social opportunities for mid 20s blokes like going for a pint and a punt they need to find other avenues for relaxation. If he wants to play a video game for a few hours a day so be it.

I was so angry at the club with how they let it play out, but at the end of the day footy clubs are businesses and if one of your employees isn't realising their potential, no matter how great, they need to be moved on for someone who will.

I'll still be cheering him on every week bar 2 most years and will always be a port boy to me. I also think once Hinkley is gone there's a very real chance he may come back, as much of a pipe dream that is.

Gee that’s a revelatory story Russ.

Sounds like there might have been a better outcome for the Power with better communication and understanding of the situation.

Think it’s a bit strange expecting him to socialise off the field, not every individual is suited to the culture of AFL footballers. I would imagine the Hoff also doing more of his own thing but I could be misconstruing him.

At the end of the day Port got a good deal for him and you can be satisfied that you’ve been compensated pretty well. If everyone’s fit you could have a pretty potent forward line this year with some skilful youngsters hopefully allowing Gray to win you more ball out of the middle. You do lack a quality out and out winger with Polec gone but maybe someone else will step up.

Personally love Wingard, one of the most entertaining players in the league to watch when he’s firing
