QLD TO BECOME THE HOME OF FOOTY FOR 2020
The AFL has told clubs and players it wants to extend hub stays until the end of the home and away season.
As first reported by Gerard Whateley on SEN, Victorian clubs were told they will be based in Queensland for nine more weeks, while Perth will operate as a secondary hub.
NSW-based teams will relocate and families will be allowed to join staff and players in Queensland and Western Australia.
The submission has not yet gained approval from the AFL Players’ Association, which plans to speak to delegates and its board on Wednesday to reach a consensus.
Foxfooty.com.au understands there will be no giant phone hook-up like there was towards the beginning of the season and nor will more than 800 players be asked to vote.
But it appears the players will have little choice but to accept the league’s new plan — which goes against the original proposal of five weeks in hubs and no more — for the good of the game.
To keep the season afloat, the league has decided it needs to fit 11 rounds in nine weeks, according to a senior club official familiar with the AFL’s objectives.
If ticked off, Victorian clubs would end up being away from home from Rounds 6-17 and potentially finals.
After enduring indifferent hub experiences from Rounds 2 to 6, West Coast and Fremantle appear destined to spend the rest of the 2020 home and away season in their home city.
By moving teams out of NSW after the next batch of games, the AFL is continuing to out-run the Covid-19 virus.
It’s understood the league is keen to play at least a few games in Darwin, but broadcasting games from the Northern Territory capital presents financial and logistical headaches.
The AFL’s submission raises serious questions on whether the 2020 Grand Final can be played at the MCG.
Although the Melbourne Cricket Club remains committed to hosting football’s biggest day, it now appears increasingly unlikely.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the AFL had approached her about moving more of its teams and players to Queensland.
It comes after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk confirmed hundreds more players, teams and staff were likely to set up camp north.
And the premier again lobbied AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan for this year’s Grand Final to be played in Queensland.
With clubs currently based in New South Wales set to abandon the state amid a rise in COVID-19 cases, Premier Palaszczuk said the AFL had approached her about moving more of its teams and players to Queensland.
Speaking after announcing no new COVID-19 cases for the state, Ms Palaszczuk said the AFL was hoping to “book accommodation for hundreds of players and officials at Queensland hotels for two months”, but stressed the health of the state’s citizens remained the No. 1 priority.
