Thoroughly enjoyed the salary cap components (front and back-loading, etc) and somehow managed to have the following amount spent in 2021, 2022 and 2023 on the auction draft players (individual amounts varied each season)

Got some final questions (probably stupid ones I know):

1. Does any unused portion of the 2020 salary get carried forward?

2. Same about any 2020 not allocated contract years ?

NO. Remaining salary is available for any trades you may make before the trade deadline.

So to confirm (using an example)
$17,300,000 spent
126 contract years used
Trade player on a 1 yr deal at $300,000 for a player on a 2yr deal at $450,000
Then moves to $17,450,000 and 127 contract years
7 players have their contract expiring at the end of the season worth $2,000,000
Means you have $2,550,000 in cap for 2021 to spend on 7 players with 12 contract years to offer?

I read it differently. My take is that the $550k will not carry over ... your $2m in cap for 2021 remains at $2m.

Salary: $550K + $2M = $2,550,000
Contract Years: 3 + 44 = 47

You have 44 players who each lose a year, therefore 44 years each year becomes available.

EDIT: The salary assumes that you don't have back and front end contracts affecting the $550K. i.e. average contracts across the board.

So ..... thinking out aloud .....

I still have 1.4 mill of salary space unused ....

So could I trade a player for a bargain price and pick up a fair bit of the existing contract price in return for a player and pick up the full tab ...

Ie. Say a defender 450k per year on a four year deal .... I swap for a rookie priced player (say someone from the 2018 draft class) but maintain the majority of the expense for player I traded out ... net loss say 250k per year

- But at the same time also pick up an expensive additional gun (45th player) with the salary cap space that I have left over ... approx 1 mil ....

If I understand correctly, the passage of time will mean that the contract years will rise by a further 37 (squad of 44 less the 7 traded) ... I think?

Some huge variations in team structure (GnR/mid-priced madness, or top end quality vs depth) as well as the spread across lines.

Personally I am pretty happy with what I ended up with overall, but I will be very much open for business from a trading perspective.

Agree ... I'm definitely open for trade discussions ...
- Got 1.45 million available so funds not an issue ...
- Coupled with at least 10 contracts years to play with as of right now ... until I finalise them tomorrow night ...

Edit: for a different view of what I'm looking like before tomorrow night ...

If I was in your position I’d definitely be trying to spend some of that cash (noting I’ve never done this before). The forward line looks the obvious spot to me, unless you’re quite bullish on some of the younger guys coming through quickly.

I haven’t bedded down contract years, but expect I won’t have an issue there (lots of short term picks) but am quite tight on cap. I think I have good depth though, including in the forward line, so maybe we could come to an arrangement.

The main thing I’m probably lacking is captain’s picks (although taking Gawn off your hands won’t help you much in spending your cap ?), and top quality mids and young talent.

I don’t have a clear view on what might make sense for us to do trade-wise, but am open to suggestions.

Hard to get a gauge without seeing full team depths but I see you have ROB, Ceglar and Fort ...

- Any of them would interest me ... even possibly Jack Steven ...

I’ll likely post my full squad (nicely formatted!) on the weekend, but I would struggle to trade ROB or Ceglar given they’re my R1 and 2, with only guys like Hickey, Kreuz and De Koning as backup.

Fort could be tradeable, but note he’s not R-F, if that’s what you were thinking (just FWD). He could maybe strengthen your forward line though, if you’re bullish on him getting hitouts and rucks scoring well (as most of us probably are). I’d also be open to trading Steven - albeit worth flagging that I am reasonably bullish on both of them as picks at their prices. Fort could be a handy R-F next year and Steven could be close to a top forward if he gets himself right (I know that’s a decent “if”).

Edit: your squad looks pretty solid for game counts up forward, so Steven might be the sort of player that could blend well (scoring likely well inside your F6, with game count the main risk, but you have durable forwards, so maybe you can handle that risk). Thomas is probably the main one I can see that would be of interest, not sure if something involving Steven and Thomas could make sense for both of us.
