Yep, think it was some over reaction from Malthouse perplexed by how many of our core players were injured too often. Jamison & Waite missing so often or carrying injuries seems to have made Malthouse extra cautious in his 1 year at the club

I have today kind of stumbled over another possible smoky I may consider, a lowish midpricer I may use as a bit of a pinch hitter. Only about a 25% chance I will pick him, really depends on how I end up rating the quality of the rookies after the Nab Cup as to whether I will be brave enough to give this guy a go.

However it does scare me that he has never scored 100 before!

I can see after round 2 or 3 quite a few 'secret players' being revealed after they start the season with a BANG!!:)
If/once that happens the challenge is working out the right time to trade them out before it all goes wrong or if they will sustain it enough to go the whole season.

I hope if I do pick a secret player or two they go BANG! (or if I chicken out they crash and burn!)

I don't often like to take speculative picks but I figure with the extra trades I may give them a go and if I get it wrong well I will just trade them after 2 weeks to whichever rookie cash cow I happened to miss out on.

And no, it is a player who has not been mentioned on here what so ever and I certainly don't expect Jay to write on article on him.

I wouldn't be too concerned about picking who it is, most people would probably just say "yeah, nah!" if I mentioned the person anyway.

Got Selwood, but not Murphy. Staying away from players with interrupted pre-seasons this year. Definitely will find his way into my squad over the season though.
Mmmmm I was a believer in leaving out those with an interrupted preseason. Last year when it cost delidio a spot in my starting side grrrr.

it's easier to deal with taking a risk and failing than it is to ignore and miss a breakout :)

His was very slight in NAB cup. Murphy's has been pretty serious imo.

I'm more interested in the reason behind you picking him, than who it is. Interesting to see how you came up with him, especially as he's never cracked the ton. :)

A combination of reasons, none of which on their own could convince me but putting them together has made me think about it. They are:

- I took out a couple of games in which the kid was subbed/played as a tagger (which I don't think he will do again) and his average lifted by 17ppg.
- In about a third of his games he has scored in the 75 to 99 point range, so he has the potential to do a bit better score wise than some rookies. And I would be just looking for those type of scores at the start of the season before I upgrade him to a fallen premium.
- He is a naturally talented player so I expect natural improvement.
- He should spend more minutes in the midfield this year rather than being mainly stuck up at one end of the ground, and the team he plays for has an opening for an extra midfield rotation.
- Reports are that he has been tearing up the track preseason :)

Of course the doubts are will he increase his output enough to be worthwhile picking and would he get consistently better scores at the start of the season?
And secondly have I mistakenly gone 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8 !!

so true... much rather take a risk based on my own idea rather than doing nothing risky or following the crowd and just doing well and sitting in the pack. So much easier to make a call and go with it, get it wrong and deal with it than to sit on the fence or go "What if I had.....? "

Kinda wishing I didn’t say anything as I didn’t really want to make this a guessing game.
But I do think that this year I think is a year where we can take a bit more of a risk with speculative picks considering we have extra trades, emergency loophole etc.

Sounds like a Dee player :)

One should keep an eye on all of the Dees players, you just never know what Neeld is going to do which may create an opportunity for some.
Is it Kieran Harper?
Would be hard I would think for a Roos rookie or breakout candidate to start the year well with the Pies, Cats, Swans and Hawks in the first 5 rounds. I was thinking about Atley for a while but have gone a bit cold on him.

Is it Cam Guthrie?
Plays the run with role a little bit too often for my liking.

I suppose there is no real secret players out there as everyone knows who the 700 odd players that are available, and anyone that shows the slightest bit promise will be scrutinised.
