Hi Rowsus,

I was apart of the Grawndyless team at the beginning of the year and still missing Grundy from my ruckline.
My rucks are currently: Gawn, ROB (Bines) - with no Ruck/fwd player. Paying 700k for Grundy feels wrong, but it seems like the only option. Getting Grundy will hurt my upgrades elsewhere.

The options I have thought of are:

1. Get Grundy - pay the price and sleep better at night
2. Look at an alternative eg Goldy,Big boy etc - hope they can get close to Grundy for the remainder of the year will I utilise the cash elsewhere
3. Stepping stone eg Soldo/Fort - Pick up Soldo/Fort (or someone else) for the next 5-6 weeks as the ‘gap’ between the stepping stone and Grundy close.
4. Quit SuperCoach - Give up

Cheers Pieman
Is this for now or thinking more after round 13? I’m trying to find a way to get Grundy after round 13 via O’Brien for about 250k but may have to bite the bullet and do it next week if O’Brien is dropped at all.

I have the same ruckline so keen to hear the advice.

If O’Brien can hold on until round 14 bye it’s a great choice because Grundy has Gawn next week which may slow his roll a tiny bit.

Or there could be a repeat of Round 3, 2016 when Gawn and Goldy scored 172 against each other.

I couldn’t see one of the ruckman scoring 5 goals 2 again though and an insane amount of stoppages in a crazy game to watch.

Grundy has scored over 105 1 out of 8 times against Gawn and Gawn is the same scoring over 105 1 out of 7 times.

A temporary relief for me, a non Grundy owner, whose relief will be shattered when Grundy inevitably scores over 150.

Really like the fella as a SC prospect and was sure he'd break out sometime in the past few seasons but hoped the top ruck curse would strike and 2019 would be a dip and I'd look like a genius grabbing him in 2020 but I didn't not have next year hindsight.

Hi Rowan

As a melb supporter, any thoughts on Oskar Baker if he is selected again? Had been considering Fort as 2nd downgrade, Baker though gives me a couple of scores during byes where as Fort doesn't (given Grawndy overlap).

Thanks

All depends on what option I take and if/when Sauce comes in.

Hey Rows,

Our nightmare season continues with Wallis now ruled out until after bye.
Do we trade him? Or hold again.
I just cannot seem to take a trick.
There is a KP player at GWS I am thinking of bringing in this week. ?
Straight swap?
Also thinking of bringing in another KP in JK as well. Risks I know but after a shocking season .. it seems I have no choice to complete a team.
Hey Slam,
you and I have been riding a similar path all season, here are some of the problems I've had this season. I know you share most, if not all, of these too:
Brayshaw, Heeney, Mills, Darling, Coniglio, English, Milera, Nankervis, M Crouch, D Moore, Rockliff, Liberatore, Dangerfield, Andrews, Oliver, Wallis.
Only 16 problem players! :sick::poop:
(not counting deadwood Rookies either! Burgess, Ross, Pierce, Scott, Setterfield)
Crikey, that's 21 Duds! - Now I look at it, I think I've done well to sneak inside the top 30,000!

No wonder I'm running short of trades, and don't look like completing my team!

Enough of my problems, lets look at Wallis.
The first thing to do, is look at how p1ss poor the Fwds have been in general this season.
Let's look at the top 15 PIT60 Fwds averages after Rnd 10.

SCS Slam11.png

Wallis is currently 10/83.7 and $431,600. Finlayson is 10/88.8 and $460,400, Greene is 6/77.7 and $371,600.
Finlayson has averaged 103 in his past 3 games, and was averaging 83 before that. Greene is averaging 95 in his past 2. It should be noted, GWS played Melb and Carl in their past 2 games, with both those teams putting absolutely dreadful efforts! Bullies are a Rnd 12 bye, and Giants are a Rnd 14 bye, I'm not sure if that has any influence on your decision or not.
I think a lot depends on how many trades you have already used, how many games you actually think Wallis will miss and what you think Greene/Finlayson will score from here. I will admit, the GWS coming draw still looks friendly-ish.
If we assume Wallis misses 2 games + his bye, and scores at 83 from here, then a PIT60 total for his his last 12 Rounds is 950.
You probably want at least 160 points from that trade to call it a draw, and closer to 185-190+ to call it a win. Assuming your pick misses no games, you are looking for them to score 1140 to call it a win, which is 95/game. The table above shows you how hard that might be, as it is very likely that a good few of the nine current 95+ Fwds won't score 95+ in that period. One of the hard things we are all facing, is that outside the top few, both the Fwds and Defs are a real guessing game this year.
If you believe Greene can stay on the park, and score near his 2017 level, then he is a live option to help you find a value path to finish your team. He still may not, however, turn out to be a winning solution to Wallis, unless he can do that. So what it comes down to is this.
Do you believe Wallis will miss 2, or more than that?
Will Wallis being out, and Greene being in avoid a bye donut, adding to Greene's trade in value?
If you have used more than 14 trades, and won't be forced into a bye donut or two, you might be better placed to ride Wallis out, and find a way to upgrade a Rookie to Greene. If finding an upgrade to Greene doesn't fly, because of cash and down grade problems, and Greene is helping you avoid bye donuts, then if you have fairly solid faith in him, then go for it.
Remember the old rule, if in doubt, don't trade. But if you looked at it objectively, and it looks good, you won't have those doubts anyway!
Good luck, I hope you get some improvement and fun in the coming weeks.

Given my position, I will probably try and ride Wallis out, even if it equates to a bye donut. If it looks like 2 bye donuts, I may dump him.

Hey again Rowsus,

Wondering what your thoughts are on "slingshotting" mediocre performing "keepers" during the byes? At what point should we be looking to slingshot (only to a super premium etc) and how many slingshots would be reasonable? At the moment I have a few under performing keepers like Oliver, Rockliff, Steele, M.Crouch, Andrews) that I could potentially upgrade. Getting a couple keepers directly after their round 12 bye (Fyfe/Bont/Merrett/Sicily/Dunkley/Ryan) could be very beneficial for not only getting a solid 18 on the park in rounds 13 and 14, but also having a better side during the second half of the season.

Cheers.
Hey anfa,
I think slingshotting is an under used tool. Like a real life slingshot, it can backfire, and it hurts when it does that, but when it fires nicely, it's very, very satisfying.
You can't actually slingshot Rocky or Steele. They have a Rnd 12 bye, and the whole concept of slingshotting is to avoid a bye. Any player you trade a Rnd 12 bye player to either has a bye to come, or the Rnd 12 bye player himself has already passed through his bye.
The other 3 certainly can be slingshotted. Crouch and Oliver look to be the better candidates for it. I'd actually be backing Harris in to bounce back a little. An injury affected 60, and a head scratching 40 in his score lines. He's looking like a mid or high 90's player to me, and it wouldn't surpise me if he went say 95 from here to the end.
Oliver to a Ess, Freo, Haw, Port, StK or Wbull player in Rnd 13.
M. Crouch to one of those teams in Rnd 13, or a Bris, Coll, Geel, Melb, Syd, WC player in Rnd 14.
Either of those scenarios complete a slingshot trade. Depending on your bye structure, it hopefully gives you an immediate 60-120 point injection, plus if it is a successful trade, you can add hopefully another 100-200 points on top of that, with how much the new player outperforms the previous player.
I hope you get full value from it, if you have a go at it. Good luck.

Hi Pieman,
I'm in the same boat, with the same ruck line. I can't see Sauce coming straight in this week.
We might only have to get through this week anyway, and then if Sauce is back next week, we possibly get saved by the "Best 18" in the byes, if Sauce comes in for Rob in Rnd 12.
If that is the case, and you can afford to do it, hold ROB until Grundy passes his bye, and hopefully sneaks down a little in price. It won't be much if he does though.
If your structure still has you looking at a donut, if ROB is replaced by Sauce, you may as well grab Grundy, and potentially wear the donut there instead.
I don't think options 2 and 3 work. Option 2 probably gives up too many points, option 3 requires Soldo/Fort to keep playing AND keep performing.
Keep also in mind, the potential easing of VC/C problems that Grundy might offer. I myself copped an awful 79 C from Neale this week. That alone equates to a 10-15% discount on Grundy's price, and probably more, as it shuts off not just a negative POD, but a weekly Captain negative POD.
I'll be grabbing Grundy during the byes, and he'll be my last big ticket purchase. The rest of my team will require luck, and value picks ( ...... again! :()
Good luck!

Hi GFB,
Melb have Neal-Bullen and Salem to come back in, for Spargo and ........?
While Baker has pace, and they'll want to get games into him, particularly given our season is over, he actually looked a bit lost at times in his games. It might come down to him, and Garlett, and I think they'll keep Garlett.
I might be wrong, but Baker really is a risky pick in my view.
Maybe @Ben's Beasts could weigh in with his view on this one, as well.

Happy to weigh in here.

I watched Baker’s first game on TV and saw him live at the G’ on Sunday. In his first game he showed glimpses of what he’s capable of but did caught on several occasions and looked to be well off the pace of an AFL game.

I’m glad he played again on the weekend though because I really liked what I saw. There were a couple of passages of play where he just got hold of the ball and took the game on and one resulted in him kicking a goal.

I feel his speed is something we really lack so possessing that really works in his favour.

As the Dees are out of finals contention, I feel as though it’s a great time to get games into young players like Baker. So if he just continues to play similarly to how he played on the weekend then I feel there’s a spot for him in our team.

Like most other young players though, one or two bad games could see him go back to the VFL.

I think if named this week which is extremely likely then he looks to be a decent option albeit a low scoring option in my view.

Cheers Row,

Think I will need to join you in the value hunting. Might even have to keep Rozee and Hore for a bit longer.

Thanks Guys, both very helpful. Probably will be tempted by him, although will watch the ins.

Hi Rowsus

Hope all is well.

Has there ever been a set of brothers where one has been a senior coach and the other has been a player in the VFL/AFL in the same season ?

Cheers

Syd and Gordon Coventry. Syd coached Footscray from 1935 to 1937, whilst Gordon retired after the 1937 season.

wow great research

I was thinking maybe Neale Daniher but he starting coaching the year after Chris retired.

Pretty rare then

Cheers
Yeah, that's a great get @KLo30 ! Thought Norm and Len Smith might have been a chance but no overlap there as far as I can tell.

North Melb.
AFL wise: Jade and Brady Rawlings. Jade coached Richmond for 11 games in 2009 after Terry Wallace resigned, and Brady retired at North Melbourne in 2011 after previously playing with his brother in 2006.

(Particularly proud at remembering this one)
