So if he needed a full ankle reco you're telling me he played on one fit leg last year and still punched out the average he did?

If he's right to go Round 1 then bloody sign me up.
Ankles aren’t like knees, you can strap an ankle immobile and it’s very hard to do any more damage to it and it functions pretty well. My wife’s a theatre nurse and she reckons most ankle recons are for what most people cal floppy foot where the ligaments have just stretched a bit and the foot is a bit unstable. The average punter can go their whole lives needing one but can function without it.

Whether that’s the case with Whitfield is anyones guess.

Danger vs Dunkley
No Tim Kelly, Gaz and Selwood a year older.
Dunkley has a amazing year post midfield move but stacked midfield

Coin flip for me. Forced to pick one, probably Dunkley based on their relative ages.

I get the feeling despite the apparent weaker Cats midfield this year Danger will spend a chunk of time forward. Still expect him to put up really good numbers - he's turning 30 this year so should have at least a year or two left. Doubt he'll get back to the form where he was the dominant #1 SC midfielder though, but he is a proven gun, and has possible improvement on last year with no Kelly.

Dunkley is still probably yet to hit his peak - he turns 23 this year. I don't see his numbers dropping significantly, as I don't see much has changed which would cause them to drop off.

For me, you can't go wrong with either (barring injuries), which is why both are currently in my team. That will probably change a bunch of times, but I rate both highly.

OK I haven't seen this particular conversation. If you are only going to go with one of Grundy or Gawn, what are the reasons for going for one over the other. It seems the concensus is that Gawn would be the one to be dropped but I'm not sure why, does Gawn potentially provide better value?

Grundy v Gawn

- Dees can only improve on last year, does Gawn's scoring increase based on extra wins
- or is Grundy seen to be more durable and less likely to miss games
- can Grundy improve his overall scoring

atm I am daring to live the dream that NicNat will come out absolutely firing in which case I will bring him in to the team but last year both my team and my daughters trading team started with only one of Gawn & Grundy and both finished top 1000 so I'm not as committed as most to the idea of Grawndy

Both.

Unless one gets injured in pre-season, select both or you are likely compromising your team. I've looked, but can't see anyone else that can match their scoring level.

Looking at the next lot of options you have:
Goldstein - getting on now, unlikely to improve further
Marshall - will share ruck time with Ryder
Lycett - has never shown to score at that higher level.
Witts - may improve a bit if the team does, but can't see him improving enough.
Kreuzer - been around long enough to say he won't match them
ROB - hasn't been spoken about much but should be possible for him to lift his numbers, probably not enough to match the top two
McEvoy/Martin - too old
Everyone else is below 500K which is for a reason - they are a long way off Grundy/Gawn level. Of those below, Nic Nat, English and Jacobs are those most considered. Naitanui doesn't get enough game time to match them (unfortunately), English still needs a bit more development I believe and Jacobs is past it/has Mummy to share ruck time.

I see no reason for Grundy or Gawn to drop off this season. Nothing is suggesting that. If you don't select one, you need to work out how many points per week you are losing (likely at least 20, depending on the player you substitute for them) and be able to make it up elsewhere with the cash you save. Lots tried that last year, looking at the weekly numbers posted by MarkM, not many were near the top - it was near unanimous that those at the top had both prior to R16 where Gawn missed a match. Lock them and load them - you are going to bring them in at some point anyway, so save the trade and the stress.

Was just skimming the ruck thread again and realised how cheap NN is (thought he was over $500k)...

Gawn, Doedee (D4) and Mid rookie
NN, Coniglio (M6), Def rookie
Very very big gamble injury wise, but if they score to their potential and stay healthy I think you're winning if the mid rookies aren't overly stronger than the defender rookie you're fielding.

Option 1 for me, but depends on rookies.

NN may be worth a gamble and Cogs at M6 suggests a very strong midfield to start with, I'd be worried you would be short elsewhere.

Interesting isn't it.
You could swap out Cogs for any speculative mid pick to reduce the injury risk: Tarranto, McCluggage, Curnow, maybe even Walsh if he's that good.
I think the reason I'm toying with it is Doedee at D4 seems convenient but more dicey than people want to believe :/

I reckon I could be tempted by NicNat as well, but I’d take option 1 here. I think it’s because Cogs doesn’t really appeal to me whereas Doedee does.

I’m not sure of the maths off the top of my head, but if NN allowed a forward rookie to get up to Dev Smith or Jack Steven, personally I’d probably find that more tempting.

Care to have a go at explaining the Doedee rationale to me mate? I’m just not seeing it, 20 odd games and coming back from an ACL, no sample scoring in 6/6/6, seems to be fairly prominent considering all that so I’m not sure if I’m missing something.

Whitfield and Doedee vs Laird and Devon Smith.
The ankle surgery to Whitfield has me leaning towards Laird and Smith

For me, I think with both Doedee and Smith you can expect scores around 80 from, Smith probably has a slight edge on previous form and is more likely to score higher.

After that it comes to who you think is the better choice out of Laird and Whitfield. Laird is consistent - he should average 100ish. Whitfield has a higher potential than Laird but is not as consistent and misses more games.

Laird and Smith is probably the safer pick, I probably lean more towards Whitfield and Doedee though at this stage, more for my team structure.

Cheers for the feedback. It is a bit scary not starting Whitfield but Laird down back works better for my structure as I only have Sicily and Docherty as other keepers back there.
If Lachie plays preseason games though, and looks fit, I may have to find a way to get him in
